IWU Men's Tennis Falls to Martin Methodist in NAIA National Championship

MOBILE, Ala. -- After rain postponed the conclusion of the Indiana Wesleyan University men's tennis match with Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College until Wednesday, Indiana Wesleyan dropped a 5-0 decision in the NAIA National Championship first round in Mobile, Alabama.

Doubles competition was completed on Tuesday before the rains hit but the Wildcats were already in a 3-0 hole. Play resumed at 8:30 a.m. ET this morning in singles play and the match was stopped once Martin Methodist won their fifth point of the match.

In doubles play, senior Carson VandenBossche and sophomore Luke Montgomery had the closest match in No. 2-doubles, losing 8-5. Senior Ben Bischoff and junior Micah May fell 8-3 in No. 1-doubles while junior Matt Pederson and freshman Daniel Stoddard also lost 8-3 in No. 3-doubles.

Only two singles matches were completed on Wednesday before Martin Methodist reached the needed five points for the match victory. With Martin Methodist advancing to the second round in a match later in the day, the rest of the first round match was called.

Montgomery lost 6-3, 6-1 in No. 5-singles and freshman Brooks Ayers dropped a 7-6, 6-1 decision in No. 6-singles.

The Wildcats season comes to a close with a 14-8 record. IWU went 7-0 in the Mid-Central Conference to capture their second straight conference title and third in four years.
