Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Marian (Ind.) University scored 20 of the final 26 points to upset top-seed Indiana Wesleyan University 76-55 in the Mid-Central College Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Semifinals on Friday night in Luckey Arena.
The Knights held a seven point lead (56-49) when MU sophomore forward Rachel Kenney scored a basket with 6:25 left to open the scoring on the large Marian run to end the game. The Wildcats never recovered as Marian advances to the conference tournament championship at University of Saint Francis (Ind.) on Monday night.
No. 7-ranked Indiana Wesleyan never trailed in the opening half and led by as many as 10 points (27-17) with 6:17 remaining. Marian responded with nine straight points to close the game to 27-26.
The Wildcats answered with the next five points, all by sophomore guard Rachel Steinbarger, before the Knights scored the last four points for a 32-30 IWU lead at the break.
Indiana Wesleyan held the halftime lead despite receiving no points from its top two scorers in junior forward Elaine Hessel and junior guard Kayla Thompson. Marian also outshot IWU 56.5-percent (13 of 23) to 36.7-percent (11 of 30) in the first 20 minutes.
Marian (19-13) captured its first lead of the night at 40-39 on an old-fashion 3-point play by sophomore guard Emily Smithson at 14:56. MU would not trail again.
The Knights scored the next five points and held a lead between four and six points for nearly the next five minutes. A Marian 3-pointer at 8:24 extended the lead to nine points at 52-43.
The two teams traded baskets the next six possessions which ultimately led to the 20-6 Marian run to close out the contest.
Marian hit 68.2-percent (15 of 22) of their shots in the second half and 71.4-pecent (5 of 7) from beyond the arc. MU was led by Rachel Kenney and Natalie Robinson with 19 points apiece.
Indiana Wesleyan was led in scoring by Steinbarger with 17 points. Junior forward LeAnn Douglas added 15 points and sophomore guard Stephanie Burtch had 10.
Indiana Wesleyan(26-6) will not play again until March 10 or 11 in the NAIA National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa. IWU will find out its first round opponent and game time on Wednesday, March 3.
