Box Score MARION, Ind. -- It took nearly 108 minutes of soccer for someone to score Friday night in the Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer match with Spring Arbor (Mich.) University at Wildcat Field.
But on a strange play the Wildcats scored the golden goal in the 108th minute during the second overtime for the 1-0 victory.
The play began with a free kick for Spring Arbor deep in their zone. IWU senior defender Mark Demchak won the ball out of the air with a header innocently enough. The ball then took a high bounce that cleared the last Spring Arbor defender and IWU senior forward David Trainer rushed in for the shot. Trainer fell to the ground just outside the 18-yard box but got a foot on the ball that beat the keeper for the game-winner to stun Spring Arbor and to set off an Indiana Wesleyan mob scene in the middle of the field.
Friday's match went to double overtime despite a dominating performance from the Wildcats in every facet of the game. Indiana Wesleyan outshot Spring Arbor 27-4 on the night and held a 22-4 advantage in shots on goal.
IWU junior goalkeeper Nick Platt collected the shutout victory for Indiana Wesleyan with four relatively easy saves.
Indiana Wesleyan ups their record to 6-7-1 on the season and 3-2-0 in the MCC. Spring Arbor falls to 1-12-1 and 1-4-0.
The Wildcats return to the pitch at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13 as IWU hosts No. 24-ranked Judson (Ill.) University at Wildcat Field.
