MARION, Ind. - The
IWU men's soccer team used a fast-paced attack to outlast Goshen (Ind.) College
by a score of 4-3 on Saturday night at Wildcat Field.
Wildcat senior forward David Trainer provided early
excitement to both halves as he notched both his goals within the first minute
of each half. Trainer's first goal came off of a headed pass from senior
midfielder Austin Bock on a corner kick from junior defender David Enger.
Trainer's second goal came as the result of his speed and determination as he
simply outran the Goshen defense and neatly chipped the ball over the Maple
Leaf goalkeeper.
Junior defender Ross Tanzer's head provided the Wildcats
with their remaining goals as he scored in the 40th and 43rd minutes to
increase the IWU lead before halftime. Junior midfielder Mitch Lobdell and
freshman midfielder Geoff Bowman received credit for the assists on the Tanzer
goals.
Goshen's first goal of the evening came in the second minute
as junior Julian Sider answered the first Trainer goal in quick fashion.
Goshen College would make things interesting in the second
half, as Charlie Frederick and Jan Dohnal each recorded goals to tighten the score
to 4-3. However, IWU would stiffen its defense for the rest of the game to
prevent the upset.
The victory improves Indiana Wesleyan's record to 10-8-1,
while Goshen finishes their season at 5-14-0.
The Wildcats advance to the semi-finals next Saturday as
they host Marian (Ind.) University next Saturday at Wildcat Field.
