Upland, Ind. - Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer used a trio of late second half goals to rally past Grant County rival Taylor (Ind.) University 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Taylor (Ind.) University.
After a first half that saw both teams unable to find the back of the net, Taylor freshman Ryan Beachler headed home a corner kick from sophomore Joel Ritz to break the scoreless tie in the 52nd minute of play.
Indiana Wesleyan dominated possession over the remainder of the second half and were able to create several scoring opportunities that went unrewarded. The Wildcats continued to trail until the 78th minute when freshman midfielder Geoff Bowman volleyed a pass over the last line of the Trojan defense to the streaking Kyle Joern. The senior forward's shot beat the sliding goalkeeper for the equalizer.
IWU quickly capitalized on the momentum shift. Less than five minutes later, senior forward David Trainer powered home a line drive cross from junior midfielder Ross Tanzer for the game-winning goal.
The Wildcats scoring was not over as junior forward Erik Johnson connected with a goal of his own in the 87th minute to ice the game. Tanzer was credited with the assist as his cross once again set up the IWU score.
Indiana Wesleyan held a large advantage in shots 19-10, while Indiana Wesleyan freshman goalkeeper Dylan McCauley continued his strong play as he collected three saves and thwarted many Taylor scoring chances.
With the victory, Indiana Wesleyan improves to 7-8-1 (4-2-0 MCC) while Taylor falls to 9-7-1 (3-3-1 MCC).
IWU will return to action at 7 p.m on Tuesday, October 19 as the Wildcats play host to Goshen (Ind.) College on Senior Night at Wildcat Field.
