MOBILE, Ala. -- For the second year in a row Indiana Wesleyan University met Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) College in the opening round of the NAIA Women's Tennis National Championships.
After earning a 5-4 victory a year ago for Indiana Wesleyan, Lewis-Clark State exacted some revenge this year with an 8-1 win to advance to the second round where they will play top-seeded Auburn (Ala.) University-Montgomery.
The Wildcats could not muster a point in doubles, although IWU came close. Courtney Kooyers and Laura Helm lost a heartbreaking 9-8 (7-4) match in No. 3-doubles action. Lisa Massey teamed with Eva Delk but lost 8-5 in No. 1-doubles. Julia Hedgebeth and Caitlin McGuire dropped an 8-4 decision in No. 2 competition.
Massey captured the lone Indiana Wesleyan victory on the day with a 3-6, 6-2 (10-7) win in No. 2-singles.
Hedgebeth lost 6-1, 7-5 in No. 1-singles while Delk fell 6-3, 6-3 in No. 3 play. McGuire came up short 6-1, 6-3 in No. 4 action with Kooyers dropping a 6-4, 6-2 match in No. 5-singles. Helm was beaten 6-0, 6-3 in No. 6-singles.
The Indiana Wesleyan season comes to a finish with a final record of 23-3. The Wildcats went unbeaten in the Mid-Central College Conference en route to their 17th consecutive conference championship.
