Box Score MARION, Ind. (Box Score) -- Junior midfielder Mitch Lobdell beat the goalkeeper with 33 seconds left in double overtime to lead the Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over University of Saint Francis (Ind.) in the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament First Round at Wildcat Field.
A mass celebration ensued as the Wildcats advance to the MCC Tournament Semifinals and will battle the winner of Goshen (Ind.) College and Spring Arbor (Mich.) University.
The match marked the second consecutive season that Indiana Wesleyan advances past the MCC Tournament First Round with an overtime victory. Last season, Ben Chleboun scored the golden goal less than two minutes into the first overtime to defeat Huntington (Ind.) University 1-0.
Wildcat Field was very muddy following rain showers earlier in the week, including most of the day on Friday. The men's match was also the second contest of the day as the IWU women's soccer team defeated Bethel (Ind.) College 3-0 in the conference tournament.
No. 3-seed Indiana Wesleyan controlled play throughout the match as IWU held a sizeable 24-9 advantage in shots. In the two overtime periods, Indiana Wesleyan took nine shots compared to just one for Saint Francis.
Despite the large advantage in shots, No. 6-seed Saint Francis forced overtime as senior midfielder Brad Lohman connected with a match-tying goal in the 88th minute.
Saint Francis (8-10-1) struck first early in the second half after the teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half. Lohman scored his first of two goals on the night in the 49th minute of play.
Nearly midway through the second half Indiana Wesleyan struck back. IWU sophomore Erik Johnson tied the match in the 62nd minute with the assist from sophomore forward Zach Grantham. Johnson struck once again less than five minutes later to give Indiana Wesleyan their first lead of the night at 2-1 in the 66th minute. Junior midfielder Austin Bock and sophomore midfielder Josh McKinley were credited with the assists.
Indiana Wesleyan (7-10-1) had a chance to tack on a third goal in regulation with a penalty kick. The shot did not find the back of the net as the Wildcats missed a golden opportunity.
Wildcat goalkeeper Spenser Lang was tremendous all night for IWU and made some spectacular saves in the second half. But with less than three minutes before the Wildcats looked to clinch the victory, Lohman's second goal knotted the score at 2-2 to force overtime.
Indiana Wesleyan went on the attack during the extra time and earned five shots with two on goal in the first overtime. Lobdell had a one on one opportunity with just the goalkeeper to beat. His shot went wide and the first overtime concluded with no additional scoring to force a second overtime.
In the second overtime, IWU continued to pressure the USF defense with four shots in the period.
With less than a minute remaining before the match would end in a draw and force penalty kicks to determine the team to advance in the tournament, the Wildcats were finally able to connect with the golden goal.
Lobdell gained possession of the ball deep in Cougar territory in the corner. He beat his defender baseline and was able to position himself right in front of the Saint Francis goal. From six-yards out his shot beat the USF keeper underneath to secure the 3-2 victory and a semifinal spot for the Wildcats.
Indiana Wesleyan advances to the MCC Tournament Semifinals which will be contested on Saturday, November 7. IWU will either play at No. 2-seed Goshen or will play host to No. 7-seed Spring Arbor depending on the outcome of that match being played later tonight.
