Box Score MARION, Ind. (Box Score) -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer team used a stifling defense to freeze visiting Taylor (Ind.) University on Saturday night for a 2-0 victory in frigid conditions at Wildcat Field.
The Wildcats did not allow the Trojans a single shot all night and outshot TU by a 16-4 margin.
The win moves Indiana Wesleyan into a tie with Taylor in the Mid-Central College Conference standings. Each team has four wins for 12 points although Taylor has played one more match in the MCC.
During the opening half of play neither team was able to maintain much of an offensive rhythm. IWU was able to pressure the TU defense more with seven shots and the lone shot on goal during the first 45 minutes as TU was held to only a pair of shots.
Indiana Wesleyan (5-9-1, 4-2-0 MCC) finally cracked the scoreboard during the 58th minute. Deep in the Taylor box a clearing attempt for the Trojans was unsuccessful and found Indiana Wesleyan junior midfielder Austin Bock. His shot beat Taylor goalkeeper Josh Giuliano to the right corner of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
The Wildcats continued to dominate play on both ends of the field for the remainder of the half and were successful in netting an insurance goal in the 88th minute.
IWU junior midfielder Mitch Lobdell dribbled down the left sideline and was able to beat his defender to the inside as he raced down the end line. He drove a crossing pass to the far side of the net where sophomore midfielder Jesse Bassett blasted it past Giuliano for the 2-0 lead.
Indiana Wesleyan took nine shots during the last period and put four of the shots on net. Taylor (7-9-0, 4-3-0 MCC) finished the half with two shots.
Wildcat senior goalkeeper Spenser Lang collected his second shutout of the season despite not being forced to make a save. It was the fourth Wildcat shutout this year.
Indiana Wesleyan will next play at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21 as the Wildcats take the road to play at Goshen (Ind.) College.
