Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University women's basketball team survived a scare from Goshen (Ind.) College but pushed their win streak to five in a row with a 52-45 victory at Goshen.
Indiana Wesleyan (17-6, 6-3 MCC) used a key 8-1 run with less than five minutes to play to turn a one point deficit into a 47-41 advantage with 2:23 to play in the game. From there, Indiana Wesleyan held on for the seven point win which was the largest lead for either team the entire game.
The hotly contested game featured 12 ties and 12 lead changes. Neither team gained a lead larger than four points until the Wildcats took the 47-41 lead on a field goal by sophomore guard Kayla Thompson with 2:23 left in the contest.
No. 22-ranked Indiana Wesleyan was able to overcome a poor offensive game with a defensive effort that frustrated Goshen all afternoon.
Goshen (6-17, 1-8 MCC) held Indiana Wesleyan to just 32.6-percent (15 of 46) shooting on the day but Indiana Wesleyan collected 15 steals en route to 25 Goshen turnovers. Thompson led IWU with six steals.
The Wildcats were led by sophomore forward Elaine Hessel with a game-high 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Sophomore forward LeAnn Douglas was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 12 points.
Goshen's Heather Hahn led the Maple Leafs with 15 points and a game-best nine rebounds.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28 as the Wildcats play No. 16-ranked Bethel (Ind.) College in Mishawaka, Indiana.
