(Box Score)-- A career scoring high from senior forward Landon Adler and season scoring high from sophomore forward Will Hubertz was just enough as the Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball team defeated Vanguard (Calif.) University 75-69 late Saturday night in Costa Mesa, California.
Adler led all players with 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting. He also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Hubertz connected on 7-of-11 shots, including 4-of-7 from deep, for his career high of 18 points coming off the bench.
Vanguard (2-7) overcame a six point Indiana Wesleyan halftime lead to capture an eight point lead of 53-45 with 13:12 to play in the contest. Hubertz and Adler combined for the next six points to cut the deficit to 53-51 with 10:39 on the clock.
But the Lions answered with seven of the next nine points in a minute and a half span to push their lead to 60-53. The Wildcats once again clawed back with six straight points to draw within one point at 60-59.
Hubertz scored in the paint with 4:48 left to give No. 10-ranked Indiana Wesleyan their first lead in 12 minutes at 63-62. IWU did not give the lead up the rest of the way as a pair of Adler free throws with 1:00 to play gave Indiana Wesleyan a 71-64 advantage.
Following some missed opportunities by the Wildcats to ice the game at the free throw line, the Lions moved to within three points at 72-69 and 24 seconds remaining. Senior guard Antonio Murrell hit one free throw and senior guard Jon Moon hit two to hand the Wildcats the victory at the foul line. Murrell ended the night with 14 points and seven boards.
Indiana Wesleyan (12-3) shot well from the field with 27-of-49 (55.1-percent) shooting. Vanguard was held to just 22-of-61 (36.1-percent) from the floor but was able to stay close behind a lot of 3-pointers. Vanguard ended the night 13-of-29 (44.8-percent) from deep.
The win completes the California trip for the Wildcats. IWU leaves the west coast with a pair of victories over NAIA Division I Golden State Athletic Conference members.
Indiana Wesleyan will now break for the holidays and return to action at 7 p.m. on Monday, December 29 as the Wildcats travel to play University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima, Ohio.
