MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women?s tennis coach Terry Porter won his 500th match on Thursday afternoon at the Sutter Tennis Center on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University.
The 500 wins are for his time as the men?s and women?s tennis coach since 1968. When Indiana Wesleyan?s intercollegiate programs began in 1968, Porter was at the helm of the men?s tennis team. He remained the coach for the men until 1995. Porter has been coaching the women since 1991.
Porter?s all-time record now stands at 500-131. While coaching the women his record is an astounding 277-24. Presently, the Wildcats hold a 156-match win streak during the fall portion of the schedule. During his long tenure as the men?s tennis coach, Porter racked up a career mark of 223-107.
?It?s an honor to have won 500 victories as the tennis coach,? said Porter. ?It?s an even bigger honor to have done it all at one place, Indiana Wesleyan University.?
In 2004, Porter was Wilson/ITA NAIA Women's National Tennis Coach of the Year. He was also the NCCAA Women's National Tennis Coach of the Year in 2003, 2005 and 2007, as his team won the national championship in each of those years.
As well as coaching tennis at Indiana Wesleyan, Porter also has coached baseball from 1968-1970, golf from 1973-1985 and women?s basketball from 1990-1999. From 1980-1987, Porter was the assistant men?s basketball coach.
Porter has also been a professor at the school for 41 years. He is an Associate Professor of Mathematics.
This year?s women?s tennis team is currently 10-0 overall and 6-0 in Mid-Central College Conference action.
Porter?s historic win came via a 9-0 shutout of the visiting Anderson (Ind.) University Ravens.
The No. 1 doubles team of senior Brittany Raymond and senior Kristi Haddad, the No. 2-doubles pair of freshman Eva Delk and freshman Lisa Massey, and the No. 3-doubles duo of sophomore Courtney Kooyers and junior Laura Helm all won their matches by scores of 8-2 to give the Wildcats an early advantage of 3-0.
Junior Julia Hedgebeth won in No. 1-singles 6-0, 6-1 and Delk won No. 2-singles by a score of 6-0, 6-2. No. 3 Raymond, No. 4 Massey and No. 6 Kooyers each won their respective match by scores of 6-1, 6-1. Haddad won No. 5-singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Haddad?s win clinched the team match for the Wildcats and win No. 500 for Porter.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to the courts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 29, as the Wildcats travel to play conference rival Grace (Ind.) College.
