MARION, Ind. – Indiana Wesleyan University Men's Volleyball announced the hiring of Zach Mayer as an assistant coach for the program, set to begin competition in Spring 2027.
Mayer joins the Wildcats after serving as an assistant coach at The Master's University, where he helped build one of the premier men's volleyball programs in the NAIA. During his time with the Mustangs, Mayer helped guide the program to the 2025 NAIA National Championship, completing a perfect 27-0 season, followed by a 24-2 campaign in 2026 that ended with a national semifinal appearance.
"We are blessed to have Zach join us. Finding someone to help launch our program that was already living out the #BothAnd was a priority, and I believe we've found that in Zach," said Head Coach Deane Webb. "He has experienced considerable success already in a young coaching career, and he is excited to use volleyball as a tool to influence others for Christ. His experience at The Master's University winning a national championship along with another semifinal run will accelerate the development of our program as we aim our program towards that level of competitive excellence. His experience training athletes in a Big 10 gym has allowed him to grow his coaching skills through exposure to multiple highly regarded coaches in our sport. His clear love for God and others will help our program grow a great culture and represent Indiana Wesleyan University well"
At The Master's, Mayer played a key role in player development and offensive strategy, helping implement an offensive system that led the Mustangs to a .398 team hitting percentage, ranking first in the NAIA, while averaging 13.4 kills per set during the 2026 season. He also contributed heavily in scouting, recruiting, travel operations, and alumni engagement.
Before entering collegiate coaching, Mayer developed a strong foundation in leadership and player development through multiple coaching and mentoring roles. He served as Boys Volleyball Head Coach at The Academy Volleyball Club, working with both youth and high-level athletes, including coaching an 18U squad to an appearance at AAU Nationals.
"I'm beyond excited for this dream opportunity to build a new program in my home state," said Mayer. "Deane has made me feel valued and empowered since the moment I stepped on campus, and I couldn't be more grateful to work alongside him. We're both unified in our vision for the future and are energized by the BothAnd in the ability to pursue athletic excellence while also developing young men of character, faith, and purpose. I'm blessed enough to have had great success at this level--I know what it takes to win, and I'm excited to bring that to IWU. This is an opportunity with tremendous potential, and I can't wait to get started! Go Wildcats!"
The addition of Mayer further strengthens the foundation of one of Indiana Wesleyan's newest athletic programs as the Wildcats prepare to launch men's volleyball competition in 2027.
