BASEBALL SPLITS HOME OPENER WITH HUNTINGTON

MARION, IND. - The Indiana Wesleyan baseball team split their home opener doubleheader with Huntington on Thursday, dropping a tough first game 16-15 before defeating the Foresters 3-1 behind a strong performance on the mound by Brock Buckley

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
 

 
  • IWU stormed out of the gates in their home opener, scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the first. 
  • Huntington got runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings to cut the lead to 6-2. Ty Mathews ripped a line drive into center field, scoring Andrew Sinish to push the Wildcats lead back to 5.
  • HU responded with 10 runs in the 5th to take their first lead of the game. The Foresters added an insurance run in the 6th, making their lead 13-7.
  • The home team refused to go away however, scoring 3 runs in the bottom og the 6th on RBIs from Sinish, Kyle Wu, and Trevor Vojtkofsky.
  • The teams traded runs in the 7th and 8th innings before IWU looked to complete a comeback victory in the 9th. The Wildcats scored 2 runs and had bases loaded with no outs in the final innings, but could not find the tying run, coming up short in their comeback bid.
  • Andrew Sinish went 3-5 with 1 RBI and scored 3 times. Kyle WU and Ty Mathews both went 2-4 and scored twice, WU also had 3 RBIs.
  • Four Wildcats saw action on the bump. Cooper Chinn led the way, pitching 4 innings with 2 strikeouts and 3 hits in the start. Gabe Stout and Silas Borders combined for 9 strikeouts and 5 hits.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
 

 
  • Jake Thompson got the scoring started with an RBI in the 2nd, scoring Kyle Wu. Caleb Engelsman brought Colin Yoder home on the next at bat in what would be the game winning run.
  • HU got a run in the 4th on a solo shot, but Englesman scored Yoder again in the bottom of the inning to add an insurance run.
  • Engelsman went 1-2 with 2 RBIs.
  • Brock Buckley had an impressive home start, throwing a complete game with 6 strikeouts, 0 walks, and allowed 1 run.
