DEFENSE PROPELS NO. 3 FOOTBALL PAST SIENA HEIGHTS FOR SHARE OF MSFA MIDEAST CHAMPIONSHIP

MARION, Ind. – No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan football traveled up to Michigan for their final road game of the regular season against Siena Heights. The Wildcats took down the Saints, 31-14 and clinched a share of the MSFA Mideast Championship with a record of 4-0 in the MSFA and 9-1 overall. IWU has won the title the last two years and will look to win it outright with a win next week.

FIRST QUARTER


 

  • Deven Arevalo picked off the Saints on their opening drive, recording his first of the year.
  • On the next defensive possession, Garrett Hathaway forced a fumble and Clayton Mosher scooped up the ball and returned it for a touchdown to put IWU up 7-0.
  • Kyle Antoine used his legs for the first offensive touchdown of the day after avoiding a sack and finding the endzone to make it 14-0.

SECOND QUARTER


 

  • Kyle Antoine took a shot downfield on their first drive of the second quarter but was picked off at the SHU eight yard line.
  • Preston Sykes ended another SHU drive with an interception, his 2nd of the season.
  • The Saints stopped the Wildcats on the goal line and Josh Clifton connected on a 19-yard field goal to extend the lead to 17-0 at halftime.
  • Both defenses were solid all first half with IWU limited to 4-9 on 3rd down while Siena Heights went 1-9.

THIRD QUARTER


 

  • Kyle Antoine launched a 50-yard pass to Blake Brumbaugh to begin a third quarter drive, and two plays later found Levi Tidwell in the endzone to put the Wildcats up 24-0.
  • The following Siena Heights drive was stopped on 4th down by Clayton Mosher and Deven Arevalo.
  • Antoine used both his arm and legs on a 14-play, 89-yard drive, capped off by a touchdown throw to Levi Tidwell for the second time to make it 31-0 after three quarters.

FOURTH QUARTER


 

  • The Saints got on the scoreboard for the first time in the 4th quarter with a touchdown catch from Elijah Taylor to Chris Coleman after a 75-yard drive.
  • Isaiah Hayse recovered a SHU fumble on a punt return to give the Wildcats great field position.
  • Elijah Gibbs fumbled on the ensuing drive to give the ball back to the Saints.
  • Siena Heights made it 31-14 on a 68-yard drive with an Elijah Taylor to Riley Dunbar touchdown throw.

OFFENSIVE LEADERS


 

  • Roosevelt Cage led the way on the ground for IWU with 153 yards on 27 carries.
  • Kyle Antoine went 13-for-30 for 150 yards with two passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown.
  • Isaac Smith had six catches for 35 yards. Levi Tidwell finished with four catches for 34 yards and two touchdowns. Blake Brumbaugh had the longest grab of the day on a 50-yard catch.

DEFENSIVE LEADERS


 

  • Clayton Mosher led the defense with 10 total tackles and came up with the fumble recovery for a touchdown. He also tallied 3.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakup.
  • Luke Bays was second on the team with 7 tackles and a half tackle for loss.
  • Mosher and Garrett Hathaway each recorded as sack, and Preston Sykes and Deven Arevalo each came away with interceptions

SPECIAL TEAMS STANDOUTS


 

  • Josh Clifton went 1-2 on field goal attempts and 4-4 on PAT's.
  • Clifton also averaged 49.4 yards on five kickoff attempts with two touchbacks.
  • Jaden Downs averaged 38.6 yards on his five punts with a long of 53.

STATS COMPARISON


 

  • The Wildcats totaled 22 first downs compared to 16 by Siena Heights.
  • The team rattled off 213 rushing yards (5.2 per attempt) compared to 44 (1.6 per attempt) to the visitors.
  • Overall, IWU registered 365 yards compared to 265 by SHU.
  • IWU was 9-18 on third downs while Siena Heights was 3-14.

  • IWU has clinched a share of the MSFA Mideast Championship with a record of 4-0 in the league. IWU has won the title the last two years and will look to win it outright with a win next week.
