MORTON LEADS BASEBALL TO UPSET OF NO. 3 GEORGIA GWINNETT

LEWISTON, ID. -  Indiana Wesleyan baseball kept things rolling in the 2023 Avista NAIA Baseball World Series on Monday, upsetting the No. 3 team in the country with an 1-10 win over Georgia Gwinnett. Jeff Morton was key to the Wildcat's upset, launching a three run homer in the 2nd inning and making several run saving plays in the field. The win marks the 5th Top-25 win for Indiana Wesleyan in 14 days.

  • Ty Mathews scored the Wildcat's first run on a wild pitch in the 1st inning. MJ Stavola drove in 2 runs with an RBI single, scoring Nick Wiley and Evan Salmon.
  • Mathews sent a 3 run bomb to left center field to start the scoring in the second inning. Wiley drove in Salmon with an RBI single, and Jeff Morton capped the inning with a 3 run shot of his own.
  • Georgia Gwinnett began to claw their way back into the game with a 5 run 4th inning.
  • The Grizzlies added another run in the 5th and 3 in the 8th to make the score 10-9.
  • Colin Yoder scored on a sac fly from Colby Jenkins to extend the lead to 2 in the 8th.
  • GGC scored one run in the 9th, but a double play from Engelsman, Roman, and Goodin shut the door on the Grizzlies.
  • Evan Fry got the start on the mound, going 4.2 innings with 4 strikeouts, 5 hits, and 6 earned runs.
  • Grayson Knight earned the win, pitching 2.2 innings with 1 strikeout, 4 hits, and 3 earned runs.
  • Jake Engelkes got the save with 1.2 innings of work, allowing only 2 hits and 1 earned run.
