FOOTBALL PREVIEW: NO. 7 WILDCATS TRAVEL TO MARIAN FOR TOP 10 BATTLE

PREVIEW

WEEK 3: INDIANA WESLEYAN (3-1) vs. MARIAN UNIVERSITY (IND.) (4-0)
After back-to-back home games, No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan football hits the road for the biggest game in the NAIA at No. 5 Marian Saturday evening.
The Wildcats are looking for their first road win in the young series. IWU lost a 23-14 decision on March 13, 2021.
This year, the two teams each sport some of the biggest playmakers on both sides of the ball in the NAIA.

THE SERIES

After dropping the first two games in the series, IWU bounced back last year to post a resounding 41-7 victory over Marian.
The Wildcats had dropped the first two games in the series by close margins.
A year ago, IWU led 38-0 heading into the fourth frame.

TEAM LEADERS

The Wildcats are averaging 34.25 points per game while limiting foes to 16.25 a contest.
Xander Stokes leads the passing attack having hit 66-101 for 715 yards and eight touchdowns. He's averaging 178.75 yards per game through the air.
Stokes' main target has been Jacquez carter, who has a team-high 19 catches for 257 yards and a pair of scores. Markell Stephens-Peppers also has two touchdowns while recording 66.67 yards per game.
The balanced rushing attack is led by Dederrian Williams' 59 yards a game. Daniel Weems accounts for 55.5 yards per game with a team-high three scores. Jameson Chesser completes the three-headed monster. He's averaging a team-best 8.1 yards per carry while recording 48.33 yards/contest.
IWU's defense is paced by Clayton Mosher's 29 total tackles, including 17 of the solo variety. He also accounts for 4.5 tackles for loss.
Justin Johnson and Donovan Shelton each have 16 solo tackles. Shelton's three interceptions lead the team.

Marian's passing attack is guided by Zach Bundalo, who has hit 56-77 through the air for 944 yards. He's averaging 236 yards a contest while tossing 10 touchdowns.
Ben Stevens is the focal point of the passing attack, having hauled in 19 passes for 451 yards. Stevens has five touchdowns and is accounting for 112.8 yards a game.
The Knights' rushing attack is balanced but William Gibson leads the squad with five touchdowns and 61.5 yards per game. Baron Huebler has also scored five times while churning up 57 yards a contest.
The defense is impressive with eight student-athletes having recorded an interception – and two have been returned for touchdowns. Those came from Andy Myers and Logan Blake.
Blake and Jake Paris lead the defense with 16.5 total tackles. Tyler Majors has a team-best six tackles for loss.

ABOUT THE KNIGHTS

Marian leads the country with its 57.3 points per game.
The Knights' 32 touchdowns are second nationally, behind Benedictine (in one less game).
Marian's 515.5 yards of total offense is second in the country.
The 242.3 yards of offense on the ground is seventh in NAIA. The Knights' 5.7 yards per carry is fourth in the nation. However, the team's 17 rushing touchdowns is the most in the country.
The 273.3 yards of offense through the air is 10^th nationally. Ben Stevens' 112.8 receiving yards and 23.7 yards per reception are each fourth in the nation.
Marian is averaging 25 first downs a contest, which is sixth in the nation.
The Knights are one of five schools that has also registered a safety this season.
In the red zone, Marian has converted 18-21 for touchdowns (86 percent). Only twice has the team been stopped in the red zone.
The defense has a pair of touchdowns to its credit.
Since 2010, Marian is 66-11 at home.

WHAT TO WATCH

Marian is giving up just 5.25 points per game through four outings. The Wildcats and their high-scoring offense go up against one of the best defenses in the country. IWU is not a one-dimensional team and has the capability to beat teams through the air and on the ground.
Marian has not allowed a point in the first quarter while outscoring foes 64-0.
