FIRST-QUARTER MOMENTUM CARRIES WILDCATS TO SEASON OPENER WIN

MARION, Ind. - Indiana Wesleyan football kicked off their 2021 season Friday night hosting NCAA Division 1 Valparaiso, in what would turn out to be a rainy night game. The first quarter was the difference in the game, and propelled IWU to the first win of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX
QUARTER 1:
  • IWU scored just three minutes into the game when Jacquez Carter found the endzone behind a 32-yard run.
  • Rushing continued to be the key scoring output, as Devodney Alford found the endzone with 8:21 remaining in the first quarter.
  • With 5:25 remaining in the quarter, Justin Johnson returned a punt for 71 yards to collect IWU's third touchdown.

QUARTER 2:
  • Valparaiso mustered their first points of the game connecting on a field goal.
  • With 16 seconds to go before halftime, Devodney Aldford pushed the Wildcat lead to 25, finding the endzone after a 13 yards run.

QUARTER 3
  • Valparaiso found momentum early in the second half, recording their first and only touchdown of the game, just three minutes into the third quarter.
  • Momentum was in favor of the Valpo for most of the third quarter, but a Donovan Shelton's interception ended the quarter, shifting momentum back to the Wildcats.

QUARTER 4
  • Both teams posted goose eggs in the fourth.
  • Donovan Shelton collected his 11th tackle on the night, good for most by any Wildcat.
  • Devodney Alford pushed his rushing total to 120 yards, eight short from posting a new career high.

HIDDEN STATS
  • Tonight was the first time IWU collected four interceptions in a game, topping their previous record of breaking three interceptions in a game on Oct. 30, 2018 against Lawrence Tech.
  • In their fourth season, this was IWU's first season-opening win.
  • This win marks IWU's first win over a Division 1 program.
