#19 BASEBALL TOTALS 21 RUNS IN SWEEP OVER HUNTINGTON, HOLDS THREE GAME LEAD IN LEAGUE STANDINGS

MARION, Ind. – The No. 19 Indiana Wesleyan baseball team posted a pair of victories Friday afternoon in league action, winning 12-1 and 9-8 over Huntington. IWU tallied four deep balls, two triples, and five doubles in the two games.

INSIDE THE BOX – Game 1

  • IWU took a 1-0 lead in the first after Tye Thixton tripled and came home on a Colby Jenkins groundout. The Wildcats pushed the margin to 3-0 on Denver Blinn's two-run homer in the third, also plating Thixton.
  • Leading 3-1 in the sixth, IWU broke open the game with a nine-run frame.
  • Lucas Goodin ripped a double down the right field line in the sixth, plating Blinn and Jenkins as Tanner Killian moved to third. Nick Coy belted a three-run homer over the center field wall, scoring Killian and Goodin.
  • Blake Storr doubled and Zach Rabe singled him home. Thixton's single pushed Rabe to second. Moments later, Colby Jenkins blasted a pitch to right center field for a triple, clearing the bags. Jenkins scored to complete the tally.
  • For the game, Thixton led the way with three hits. Blinn, Lucas Goodin and Storr had two hits apiece.
  • Jenkins and Nick Coy had three RBI each. Blinn and Goodin each scored twice. Thixton's three runs led everyone. Blinn and Jenkins crossed home twice.
  • Isaiah Rivera pitched all seven frames, giving up just one unearned run on four hits. He struck out six batters in the victory.
  • Six of the 13 hits went for extra bases – two doubles, two triples and a pair of homers.




INSIDE THE BOX – Game 2

  • Huntington jumped on top of game two with a two-run first inning.
  • The Wildcats plated a run in the second and three in the third for a 4-1 edge. However, HU scored five in the fifth only to have IWU pull within one with a two-run fifth.
  • Huntington scored a run in the sixth but a three-run bottom of the frame pushed the Wildcats ahead by a 9-8 score.
  • Killian doubled in the second and scored moments later. Down 2-1 in the third, Jenkins doubled in Rabe. Killian's single scored Blinn and Jenkins for the lead.
  • Down 7-4 in the fifth, Killian smashed a two-run homer to make it a one-run game. Losing 8-6 in the sixth, Storr and Rabe reached base and were able to take their time coming home when Thixton launched a three-run shot for what turned out to be the game-winning run.
  • With Braedon Norman pitching the final 2.1 innings, IWU secured the victory. Norman and Austin Swift, who started, combined for seven strikeouts.  




NEXT TIME OUT

  • The Wildcats take the field again tomorrow against Huntington for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
