Softball Clinches Spot in Opening Round Championship

MARION, Ind. – It wasn’t the perfect way, but Indiana Wesleyan softball finds itself in the Championship game of the NAIA Opening Round Marion Bracket. The Wildcats dropped game one in the morning to #1 Oregon Tech, 4-1. In a rematch from game one of the tournament and with elimination on the line, IWU took care of business defeating #3 Central Baptist, 5-2.

 

GAME 1 (Oregon Tech def. Indiana Wesleyan, 4-1)

  • IWU struggled from the dish capturing just four, with Mackenzie Brown leading IWU with two hits on three attempts and driving in the lone Wildcat run.
  • Brown doubled in her first at-bat and tripled in her third.
  • Sarah Abramson went the distance for the Owl’s, striking out ten while walking three.
  • The trio of Mckenzey Ridge (3IP), Addie Benham (2IP), and Hannah Miller (1IP) all went to the rubber for IWU, giving up 12 hits while mustering just two strikeouts.
  • The trio threw 84 total pitches while Abramson threw 106.
  • Oregon Tech scored two runs in the third and fifth to earn the victory, while IWU put their lone run-up in the seventh.

 

GAME 2 (Indiana Wesleyan def. Central Baptist, 5-2)

  • Mackenzie Brown put the Wildcats on the board first in the top of the third, driving in Kira Madl who reached the base on a walk. Rebecca Schard carried the momentum forward, scoring Addie Benham from second with a single to right-center.
  • Trinity Medina went 2-for-3 in the game and provided a single in the top of the sixth, scoring Sydney Lowe, giving IWU a 4-1 lead headed into the seventh.
  • Miranda Wehrle provided the insurance in the seventh, homering over center-field for her 15th home run of the season.

 

 

NEXT TIME OUT

  • IWU will face Oregon Tech tomorrow at 11 a.m. EST.
  • The Wildcats will need to defeat the Owl's twice in order to advance to the NAIA World Series.
