NAIA Championship Rematch Witnesses Men?s Basketball Come-From-Behind, 2 OT Win

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Hutzell Athletic Center witnessed a thriller on Saturday as No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball stunned No. 3 Saint Francis (Ind.) 85-81 in double overtime. Indiana Wesleyan overcame a 17 point halftime deficit to win the first rematch of the 2016 NAIA DII National Championship Game. Lane Mahurin provided another huge effort with 32 points and 10 rebounds.

  • Indiana Wesleyan had the final possession of regulation and Saint Francis held the ball for the last shot in the first OT. Both teams failed to hit the game-winning basket.
  • Indiana Wesleyan led 83-81 in the second OT and USF had a chance to tie. Bryce Lienhoop drove the baseline and his shot drew only iron. Trevor Waite pulled down the rebound with 1.2 seconds left. Saikou Jallow was fouled and hit both free throws for the win.
  • Lane Mahurin contributed a double-double with 32 points and 10 rebounds and becomes the first Wildcat with back-to-back 30 point games since at least the 2003-04 season. He finished this week with 34.5 points and 9.5 rebounds.
  • The double overtime game is the first meeting between Indiana Wesleyan and Saint Francis since IWU won 69-66 in the national championship game on March 15, 2016.
  • The Wildcat win is the first regular season victory over the Cougars since January 31, 2015. IWU won that game 76-75 when Jonny Marlin hit the game-winning bucket with 1.3 seconds left. That game also saw Indiana Wesleyan win with a 17 point come-from-behind victory.
  • This is the first overtime game that Indiana Wesleyan has played in since a 102-95 OT loss in the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals to Bethel (Ind.) on March 1, 2014. It is the first double OT game since January 31, 2012 when Indiana Wesleyan beat Huntington (Ind.) 80-78.
  • The loss for Saint Francis ends a USF record 21 game win streak inside Hutzell Athletic Center.
