Women?s Tennis Secures First NAIA National Quarterfinals Berth

MOBILE, Ala. -- No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan University made quick work of No. 9 Middle Georgia State in a 5-0 victory in the NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championship Second Round in Mobile, Alabama. The win gives Indiana Wesleyan their first ever appearance in the national quarterfinals.

What Went Down

  • Indiana Wesleyan swept doubles play and led 3-0 early.
  • The No. 1-doubles team of Katie Wilson (SR/Middletown, Ind.) and Lucia Solis (FR/Tucuman, Argentina) plus the No. 2-doubles team of Rachel Bottorff (JR/Newburgh, Ind.) and Alex Mella (FR/Libertyville, Ill.) both won by 8-5 scores. The No. 1 team trailed 5-2 before winning the final six games while the No. 2 team trailed 4-1.
  • Kelsey Vessels (JR/Roanoke, Ind.) and Ellen Hornet earned an 8-3 victory at No. 3-doubles.
  • Lucia Solis did not lose a game at No. 2-singles en route to a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
  • Mikayla Marazzi (JR/Abbotsford, BC) collected a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5-singles.

  • Indiana Wesleyan improves to 12-16 all-time at the NAIA National Championship. The victory on Wednesday was the first ever in the Second Round.
  • Indiana Wesleyan was one of eight teams to earn byes in the First Round.
  • Katie Wilson broke the program record with her 115th career doubles victory.
