Springer Home Runs Help Softball Split with Spring Arbor

MARION, Ind. -- Alex Springer (SO/Fort Wayne, Ind.) belted a pair of 2-run home runs in the nightcap of the doubleheader with Spring Arbor (Mich.) in a 14-1 victory. Spring Arbor won the opener 2-1 as Indiana Wesleyan claimed the season victory with wins in three of four games.

What Went Down (Game 1)

  • Indiana Wesleyan scored in the 1st inning as Kelsey Kooistra (SO/Grand Rapids, Mich.) crossed the plate on a wild pitch for the early 1-0 lead.
  • Kasidy Coats flared a single to right field for a two-run hit in the 2nd inning as Spring Arbor took a 2-1 lead. It would end up being the final runs in the game.
  • Neither team had a hitter reach base in the 3rd and 4th innings.
  • The first two Wildcats reached base in the fifth inning on Cougar errors. But a double play and a ground out ended the Wildcat threat.
  • Indiana Wesleyan could not muster a base runner over the final two innings.
  • Both teams finished the game with three this.
  • Haley Nixon (SO/Bristol, Ind.) was the losing pitcher as she allowed two runs -- one earned -- on three hits in 7.0 innings. She walked three and struck out nine Cougars.

     

What Went Down (Game 2)

  • Spring Arbor scored in the top of the 1st inning but Alex Springer drilled a 2-run home run in the home half for a 2-1 Indiana Wesleyan lead.
  • Indiana Wesleyan exploded for 9 runs on 10 hits and 1 error in the 2nd inning to lead 11-1. There were 13 Wildcats to reach the plate in the inning.
  • Indiana Wesleyan added a single run in the 3rd inning and two more in the 4th inning as the 14-1 lead forced the mercy rule victory. Alex Springer did the damage in the 4th inning with another 2-run home run.
  • The Wildcats had 18 hits in the win as 9 Wildcats had at least one hit. Five Wildcats provided multi-hit games.
  • Alex Springer was 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, six RBI, and four runs scored.
  • Lauren Buckley (FR/Centennial, CO) and Kaisey Carson (JR/Avon, IN) each tallied three hits. Buckley scored twice while Carson had a pair of doubles and three RBI.
  • Kaisey Carson improves to 13-1 with the win. She gave up one run on two hits in 3.0 innings. Janessa Guevara (SR/Lathrop, Calif.) pitched the final 2.0 innings and did not give up a run on one hit. She did not walk a batter and struck out four.

  • Indiana Wesleyan hosts Grace (Ind.) on Saturday at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day for Indiana Wesleyan at Wildcat Field.
