Softball Earns Split with No. 17 Marian

MARION, Ind. -- The top two softball teams in the Crossroads League did battle at Wildcat Field and each left with a victory. The doubleheader split leaves Marian (Ind.) 3.0 games ahead of Indiana Wesleyan in the Crossroads League standings.

What Went Down (Game 1)

  • Indiana Wesleyan broke a scoreless draw with the game’s first run in the 5th inning. Kelsey Kooistra (SO/Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored on a Kaisey Carson (JR/Avon, IN) at bat.
  • Marian responded quickly with a run in the top of the 6th inning. Carley Greene doubled to deep center and a bobble in the outfield allowed her to take third. She scored on the next at bat as Morgan Burtron hit a sac fly for a 1-1 game.
  • Neither team scored again as the game went to the 10th inning with the international tie-breaker rule in effect. Marian quickly took advantage with an Erica Miller RBI single for the 2-1 lead and later in the inning Burtron hit a second sac fly for a 3-1 score.
  • Kelsey Kooistra led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a single to put the tying run on base. But a flyout followed by two strikeouts ended the threat and the game.
  • Haley Nixon (SO/Bristol, Ind.) suffered the loss following a very good outing. She gave up three runs -- one earned -- on 11 hits in 10.0 innings.
  • Kelsey Kooistra was 4-for-4 at the plate with a run and a stolen base.

     

What Went Down (Game 2)

  • Indiana Wesleyan scored early and often in game two to pull away for the 7-0 victory.
  • Alex Springer (SO/Fort Wayne, Ind.) clubbed an RBI double and Abby White (SR/Georgetown, Texas) had an RBI groundout in the 1st inning for the 2-0 lead.
  • Kaisey Carson hit an RBI single and Alex Springer had a two-run single in the 2nd inning as Indiana Wesleyan built a 5-0 lead.
  • Gabby Bogear (SR/Sacramento, Calif.) scored in the 3rd inning as part of a double steal while Alex Springer drilled a home run in the 4th inning for the 7-0 Wildcat advantage.
  • Kaisey Carson (10-1) earned the shutout victory with no runs in 7.0 innings. She allowed eight hits and two walks while striking out two. Marian left 11 runners on base.
  • Alex Springer had a huge game with a 3-for-4 performance with a home run, a double, and 4 RBI.
  • Kaisey Carson and Gabby Bogear each contributed two hits while Allison Bexell (SR/Avon, Ind.) reached base twice on walks.

  • Indiana Wesleyan has a quick turnaround as they play Bethel (Ind.) on Tuesday in Mishawaka, Indiana. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
