MVNU Upsets Softball in DH Sweep

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball saw their season-high 16 game win streak come to an abrupt halt as host Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) stunned the Wildcats in a doubleheader sweep. IWU now has two more losses than Marian (Ind.) in Crossroads League action.

What Went Down (Game 1)

  • Mount Vernon Nazarene scored the first run of the game on three hits in the 4th inning.
  • Indiana Wesleyan tied the score 1-1 in the next half inning when Lauren Buckley (FR/Centennial, CO) scored on a wild pitch.
  • MVNU captured a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the 5th with three hits in the inning, including a pair of extra base hits.
  • IWU cut the deficit in half at 4-2 with a Haley Nixon (SO/Bristol, Ind.) sac fly in the sixth inning.
  • MVNU led 5-2 in the 7th inning when Indiana Wesleyan rallied. Mount Vernon Nazarene committed a pair of errors with two outs and an RBI single by Kelsey Meyers (SR/Brea, Calif.) led to a pair of Indiana Wesleyan runs for a 5-4 score.
  • With runners on first and second and two outs, Haley Nixon lined out to first to end the rally as MVNU picked up the 5-4 win.
  • Kelsey Meyers was 3-for-4 with 1 RBI while Lauren Buckley finished 1-for-2 with 1 walk, 2 runs scored, and 2 stolen bases.
  • Haley Nixon (11-5) suffered the loss as she allowed 5 runs in 6.0 innings. She gave up 10 hits and 0 walks and struck out 3.

     

What Went Down (Game 2)

  • Indiana Wesleyan scored first on a Haley Nixon sac fly in the 4th inning. The lead quickly evaporated as Mount Vernon Nazarene scored a pair of runs in the home half of the inning.
  • Kelsey Meyers tied the game 2-2 in the 6th inning with an RBI single.
  • Indiana Wesleyan plated a run in the 8th inning on a Gabby Bogear (SR/Sacramento, Calif.) RBI single but IWU stranded two runners in scoring position.
  • MVNU extended the game as Jennifer Kurelic hit a two out double to score the tying run and send the game into the 9th inning.
  • The Wildcats left a pair of runners on base in the 9th inning and the Cougars took advantage. Hannah Shaffer hit a one out single to score Cassidy Cain as MVNU completed the sweep.
  • Janessa Guevara (SR/Lathrop, Calif.) suffered the loss as she surrendered one run on two hits in 0.1 innings. Carlie Weaver (SO/Brownsburg, Ind.) started for the Wildcats and pitched 8.0 innings. Weaver allowed three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits. She struck out seven Cougars.
  • Kelsey Meyers contributed her second straight three hit game. Alex Springer (SO/Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Allison Bexell (SR/Avon, Ind.) each added a pair of hits and both of Springer’s hits were doubles.

     

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan plays another doubleheader on Friday against Huntington (Ind.). The Crossroads League doubleheader will be contested at Wildcat Field with a new start time of 4 p.m.
