Softball Opens Spring Break Trip with Split at Southern Oregon

ASHFORD, Ore. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball has headed out west for their annual Spring Break trip and started the week with a doubleheader split at Southern Oregon. Alex Springer (SO/Fort Wayne, Ind.) was 6-for-9 in the DH with three home runs and seven RBI.

What Went Down (Game 1)

  • Southern Oregon built a 6-0 lead after three innings of play.
  • Indiana Wesleyan responded by scoring six runs in the next four innings to force extra innings. Alex Springer hit the game-tying home run in the seventh to tie the score at 6-6.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, Gabby Bogear (SR/Sacramento, Calif.) hit a RBI groundout to score Darcella Blakey (SO/Indianapolis, IN) for a 7-6 advantage.
  • In the bottom of the eighth inning with one out and a runner on third base, SOU’s Aaliyah Oliver hit a single to the outfield to score the tying run. But the ball got past the outfielder and it allowed the batter Taylor Martinez to score for the game-winning run.
  • The Wildcats outhit the Raiders 10-9. But four Wildcat errors proved to be the difference.
  • Kaisey Carson (JR/Avon, IN), Alex Springer, Kelsey Meyers (SR/Brea, Calif.), and Allison Bexell (SR/Avon, Ind.) all had two hits in the game. Gabby Bogear was 1-for-4 with 3 RBI.
  • Haley Nixon (SO/Bristol, Ind.) suffered the loss. She allowed two runs -- one earned -- on one hit in 2.1 innings.

     

What Went Down (Game 2)

  •  Southern Oregon scored first again with a run in the bottom of the first inning. But Indiana Wesleyan responded with nine unanswered runs with three runs in the third inning and six more runs in the fourth inning for a 9-1 lead.
  • In the Indiana Wesleyan third inning, all three runs came after the first two batters were retired. Alex Springer had the big hit in the inning with a two-run single.
  • In the fourth inning, Kaylynn Rosen (SO/Huntington, Ind.) had a two-run single while Kaisey Carson and Alex Springer each clubbed two-run home runs. All six runs came with two outs in the inning.
  • Southern Oregon got as close as 12-8 following a four run sixth inning. But Indiana Wesleyan plated the final two runs in the seventh inning on another two-run home run off the bat of Alex Springer.
  • Alex Springer finished the game 4-for-6 with 2 home runs, 6 RBI, and 3 runs scored.
  • Kaisey Carson was 3-for-4 with a home run, 4 RBI, and 2 runs scored. She also collected the win as she gave up four runs -- three earned -- on six hits in 5.0 innings.
  • Kelsey Kooistra (SO/Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored four runs.
     

 

Extra! Extra!

  • The doubleheader at Southern Oregon was the first games for Indiana Wesleyan on their Spring Break trip. Indiana Wesleyan will play six more games on the trip in California.
