Women?s Tennis Beats Davenport for another Top-25 Win

GREENTOWN, Ind. -- No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis beat a NAIA Top-25 opponent for the fifth time in two weeks with a 5-2 victory over No. 17 Davenport (Mich.). IWU was also scheduled to play No. 19 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) but it was canceled as there was not enough time to play indoors.

What Went Down (Doubles)

  • Doubles saw three tightly contested matches with Davenport pulling out two wins.
  • Katie Wilson (SR/Middletown, Ind.) and Lucia Solis (FR/Tucuman, Argentina) won the sole Wildcat doubles match at the No. 1 spot. They won by an 8-6 score after falling behind 5-0.
  • Rachel Bottorff (JR/Newburgh, Ind.) and Alex Mella (FR/Libertyville, Ill.) were edged by a 9-8 score in No. 2-doubles while Kelsey Vessels (JR/Roanoke, Ind.) and Ellen Hornett (JR/Fishers, Ind.) lost 8-5 at No. 3-doubles.

     

What Went Down (Singles)

  •  Indiana Wesleyan won the only four singles matches that were completed as they team match was stopped when the first team reached five points.
  • Lucia Solis won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2-singles.
  • No. 3-singles saw Rachel Bottorff win 6-3, 6-3.
  • Alex Mella pulled off a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4-singles.
  • Marissa Klein (FR/Evansville, Ind) won 6-4, 6-1 to earn the Wildcats the point at No. 6-singles.
  • Katie Wilson was trailing 0-6, 6-1, 4-5 at No. 1-singles and Mikayla Marazzi (JR/Abbotsford, BC) led 4-0 at No. 5-singles when the team match was completed.
     

 

Extra! Extra!

  • Indiana Wesleyan was also scheduled to play No. 19 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) today . That match was canceled and will be moved to a date in April. With all tennis matches being moved from campus to indoors at the Howard County Tennis Center there was not enough time or courts to play.

     

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan travels to southern Kentucky on April 2 for two matches. IWU opens with a match vs. No. 3 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at 10 a.m. and then play at 2:30 p.m. vs. #RV Campbellsville (Ky.). Both matches will be played in Campbellsville, Kentucky.
