Men?s Basketball Continues Win Streak over Taylor

MARION, Ind. -- No. 4 Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball won its ninth consecutive game in the IWU-Taylor Rivalry Game sponsored by Marion General Hospital with an 86-68 outcome Tuesday night in Luckey Arena. IWU used a balanced offensive approach with six players scoring eight or more points to collect their seventh consecutive win on the season.

What Went Down

  • Indiana Wesleyan never trailed during the first half after scoring the first six points of the game.
  • A 9-0 spurt midway through the half gave the Wildcats their first double digit lead at 28-14.
  • Taylor responded with a 14-4 run to close to within 4 at 32-28.
  • Indiana Wesleyan ran off 12 straight points to gain their largest lead of the first half at 44-28. IWU took a 46-32 lead into halftime.
  • The Trojans closed to within five following a 12-2 run as IWU led 59-54 with less than 11 minutes to play.
  • The Wildcats answered the Trojan run with 10 consecutive points to take a 69-54 lead. The IWU lead was double digits over the final 9 minutes and reach a game-high 21 points at 86-65.
  • Jonny Marlin (SR/Greenwood, Ind.) scored a game-high 19 points to go along with 5 assists.
  • Lane Mahurin (JR/Rockville, Ind.) and Josh Mawhorr (SR/Muncie, Ind.) each recorded double-doubles. Mahurin had 18 points and 10 rebounds while Mawhorr earned 12 points and 12 boards.
  • Taylor’s Kyle Stidom entered play tonight with 19.3 points per game which ranks second in the Crossroads League. He was held to 9 points on 3-of-11 shooting.

  •  “You have to give Taylor credit. They made that run late and they never folded. They kept fighting and really pushed us. We needed to step up and Bob Peters (JR/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) did that. It was good to see some other guys step up tonight.”  -- IWU head coach Greg Tonagel

  • Indiana Wesleyan has won nine straight games vs. Taylor and five straight vs. Taylor in Luckey Arena.
  • The last Taylor win in the series came on February 14, 2012 in Luckey Arena.
  • Lane Mahurin saw his streak of six straight games with 20 or more points come to a close. He scored 18 vs. Taylor.
