MARION, Ind. -- No. 4 Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball overcame an early 11 point deficit to defeat No. 9 Bethel (Ind.) 93-87 on Throwback Day in Luckey Arena. With the victory, Indiana Wesleyan remains one game behind No. 3 Saint Francis (Ind.) in the Crossroads League while Bethel fails to tie IWU in the standings and falls three games back for the league lead.

What Went Down

  • Indiana Wesleyan wore retro Marion College Titans uniforms on Saturday to celebrated Throwback Day in Luckey Arena. Indiana Wesleyan used to be the Marion College Titans from 1968-1988.
  • Bethel built a pair of 11 point leads before the game was eight minutes old.
  • Late in the first half, Indiana Wesleyan used an 11-4 spurt to tie the game 39-39.
  • Jonny Marlin (SR/Greenwood, Ind.) hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key as the first half buzzer sounded to tie the score at 44-44 as the teams headed into halftime.
  • Jacob Johnson (SO/Mooresville, Ind.) scored with 18:48 left in the second half to give the Wildcats their first lead of 48-47.
  • Lane Mahurin (JR/Rockville, Ind.) hit the first of two free throws but missed the second. He gained the rebound and scored for a 51-49 advantage with 17:26 left. IWU did not trail the rest of the way. Mahurin would repeat the free throw play two minutes later.
  • With under nine minutes to play Mahurin sank two free throws for a 74-67 lead. But a 10-3 Pilot run tied the score at 77 with less than five minutes remaining.
  • The next possession saw Grant Evans (SO/Selma, Ind.) drill a 3-pointer for the go-ahead bucket. IWU built a lead as high as eight points before settling for the 93-87 victory.
  • Lane Mahurin continues his scoring tear with 31 points today to lead all players. He was 11-of-19 shooting and he also pulled down a game-high 7 rebounds.
  • Bob Peters (JR/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) added 18 points and Jonny Marlin finished with 10 points and 8 assists. Grant Evans scored 11 points and Josh Mawhorr (SR/Muncie, Ind.) added 10 points.
  • Clay Yeo had a team-high 24 points for Bethel while Jordyn Coon totaled 23 points.
  • Indiana Wesleyan shot 52-percent (29 of 55) from the field while Bethel shot 56.4-percent (31 of 55). IWU added 11 3-pointers and Bethel made 10.

  • Lane Mahurin has scored 20 or more points in six consecutive games. During the six game stretch, Mahurin has averaged 26.3 points and 6.7 rebounds while shooting 56.3-percent from the floor.
  • Indiana Wesleyan improves to 4-0 in the Marion College Titan uniforms.

  • Indiana Wesleyan will host Taylor on Tuesday in the IWU-Taylor Rivalry Game sponsored by Marion General Hospital. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Luckey Arena.
