Women?s Basketball Falls in Regular Season Finale

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- No. 15 Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball completed the 2015-16 regular season with a 61-50 loss at Saint Francis (Ind.). Indiana Wesleyan struggled in the second half as they shot 16-percent from the field to end the regular season with a 23-7 record.

What Went Down

  • Indiana Wesleyan closed the first quarter on an 8-2 run to trail 20-19.
  • Saint Francis held a 28-23 advantage early in the second quarter but a 10-2 spurt gave Indiana Wesleyan the lead 33-30.
  • Neither team scored a point over the final 2:58 of the first half.
  • The Cougars scored the first eight points of the second half to lead 38-33.
  • A Kelsey Key (JR/Anderson, Ind.) free throw with 3:46 left in the third quarter broke a 9:12 scoreless streak for the Wildcats.
  • Saint Francis scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter as well as they built a 50-40 lead midway through the final quarter.
  • Carlee Cottrell (SR/West Bloomfield, Mich.) sank a 3-pointer with 49 seconds left in the game to close to within 55-50. But Saint Francis scored the final six points to pull away for a 61-50 victory.
  • Saint Francis finished 22-of-33 (67-percent) from the free throw line while Indiana Wesleyan was 9-of-11 (82-percent) from the line.
  • Indiana Wesleyan was 50-percent (13 of 26) shooting in the opening half but was at just 16-percent (4 of 25) in the second half.
  • Carlee Cottrell scored a team-best 15 points while Jessica Brown (SR/Greenfield, Ind.) and Chelsea Winner (JR/Maria Stein, Ohio) each added 11 points.

  • The game was the final contest in the regular season.
  • Indiana Wesleyan was already locked in as the No. 3-seed in the Crossroads League Tournament before the day began. Based on Saturday results, Indiana Wesleyan learned its first tournament opponent is No. 6-seed Bethel (Ind.).

  • Indiana Wesleyan opens postseason play next week with the Crossroads League Tournament. Indiana Wesleyan is the No. 3-seed and will host No. 6-seed Bethel (Ind.) in the Quarterfinals. The game will be on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Luckey Arena.
