Third Quarter Woes Sink Women?s Basketball at Spring Arbor

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. -- Spring Arbor (Mich.) outscored No. 11 Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball 18-6 in the third quarter to spur a 62-47 upset in Spring Arbor, Michigan. Indiana Wesleyan drops their third consecutive game and falls into a third place tie with Saint Francis (Ind.) in the Crossroads League.

What Went Down

  • The first half featured eight ties and five lead changes.
  • A Carlee Cottrell (SR/West Bloomfield, Mich.) 3-pointer with 3 minutes left in the first quarter gave Indiana Wesleyan a 12-8 lead. The four point lead was the largest of the first half for either team.
  • Spring Arbor headed into halftime leading 25-24.
  • The Cougars raced out to a 14-2 run to open the third quarter. The spurt gave them a 13 point lead at 39-26. The Cougars took that 13 point lead (43-30) to begin the fourth quarter.
  • Early in the fourth quarter Indiana Wesleyan used an 8-0 run to close to within five points at 45-40.
  • After the teams traded baskets, Spring Arbor used a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 54-42 with 1:21 remaining.
  • The 62-47 final score produced the largest lead of the afternoon.
  • Indiana Wesleyan shot 39.6-percent (19 of 48) for the game and 16.7-percent (2 of 12) from 3-point range.
  • Kelsey Key (JR/Anderson, Ind.) scored a team-high 15 points for the Wildcats. Carlee Cottrell added 10 points to give IWU two players in double figures.
  • Spring Arbor was able to take advantage at the foul line. SAU hit 20-of-32 (62-percent) compared to just 7-of-13 (53-percent) for IWU.

     

Extra! Extra!

  • The loss is the third straight for Indiana Wesleyan. It is the first three-game losing streak for IWU since February 2014.
  • Indiana Wesleyan defeated Spring Arbor 93-53 earlier this season on December 2, 2015.
