Women?s Basketball Rides First Quarter Success to Win at MVNU

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball outscored host Mount Vernon Nazarene 18-11 in the first quarter and finished the game with that same seven point cushion in a 60-53 win. IWU completes the first half of Crossroads League play with a 7-2 mark which is good for second place.

  • Indiana Wesleyan scored the first 4 points en route to a 16-5 run to open the game. IWU did not trail throughout the contest.
  • Michelle King (SR/Lakeland, Fla.) scored midway through the second quarter to give the Wildcats’ their largest lead during the opening half at 26-14.
  • Mount Vernon Nazarene used a 14-2 run that lasted into the third quarter to tie the score 32-32.
  • With the score tied 34-34, Indiana Wesleyan scored nine consecutive points to pull back in front 43-34.
  • Jessica Stewart (SR/Fishers, Ind.) gave Indiana Wesleyan a 53-38 lead with 8:13 remaining. The 15 point lead was the largest of the night.
  • MVNU scored 15 of the next 19 points to close to within 4 points at 57-53 with 1:13 left to play. But three IWU free throws capped the game for a seven point victory.
  • Chelsea Winner (JR/Maria Stein, Ohio) scored a team-best 12 points. She was 4-of-6 from the floor and perfect on 2 attempts from 3-point range.
  • Kelsey Key (JR/Anderson, Ind.) joined Winner as the only other Wildcat in double figures with 10 points. Erika Isham (SR/Tekonsha, Mich.) had 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots.

  • Indiana Wesleyan outscored MVNU 18-11 in the first quarter. The final three quarters ended 42-42.
  • IWU was held without a field goal over the last 4:20 of the game.
  • The Wildcats improve to 10-0 all-time vs. the Cougars since MVNU joined the Crossroads League in 2011-12.
