Men?s Basketball Sinks Bethel in Top-10 Bout

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Top-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball earned another top-10 victory this season as they marched into Mishawaka and handed No. 7-ranked Bethel (Ind.) a 97-90 defeat on Saturday. The game featured 13 ties and 11 lead changes while Wildcat forward Lane Mahurin (JR/Rockville, Ind.) netted a career-high 27 points.

What Went Down

  • Neither team held a double digit lead on Saturday. Bethel held a six point lead in the first half while Indiana Wesleyan had a game-high nine point lead in the second half.
  • The Wildcats used a 12-2 run to close out the first half and take a 43-38 lead into halftime.
  • A Josh Mawhorr (SR/Muncie, Ind.) bucket midway through the second half pushed the Indiana Wesleyan lead to nine points for the first time at 71-62.
  • A 9-0 Bethel run tied the game at 74-74 and was the first of five ties over the next four minutes.
  • Travis Smith sank a pair of free throws with 2:30 left to give Bethel an 88-86 lead. It was the first lead during the second half for the Pilots.
  • Jonny Marlin (SR/Greenwood, Ind.) scored 10 seconds later for the 13th and final tie. On their next possession, Bob Peters (JR/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) hit a 3-pointer from the corner for a 91-88 lead. It was the 11th and final lead change.
  • A Clay Yeo bucket with 18 seconds left brought the Pilots to within three points at 93-90. Bob Peters and Jonny Marlin hit all their free throws in the last 12 seconds to secure the 97-90 victory.
  • Lane Mahurin scored a career-high 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting. He broke his record of 24 points which he set twice last season.
  • The Wildcats shot 60.0-percent (36 of 60) from the field.
  • Jonny Marlin finished with 20 points and 6 assists.
  • Josh Mawhorr added 15 points, Bob Peters contributed 14 points and 4 steals, and Trevor Waite (FR/Lizton, Ind.) netted a career-best 10 points.

  • Indiana Wesleyan improves to 4-0 this season against NAIA Top-10 teams. IWU has also defeated then No. 1 Cornerstone (Mich.), No. 7 Union (Ky.), and No. 10 IU East.
  • The Wildcats improve to 7-3 vs. the Pilots in their last 10 meetings.
