Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University volleyball won their fifth consecutive match on Wednesday night with a 3-1 victory over visiting Marian (Ind.) in Luckey Arena.
Indiana Wesleyan dominated play in the first two games with wins by 25-10 and 25-17. Marian responded with a 25-22 win in game three in which the Knights led by as many as 20-10. Indiana Wesleyan responded with the victory in the fourth game by a 25-20 score for the 3-1 win.
“I think we had a really good game plan,” said IWU head coach Candace Moats. “I think we went out strong and executed really well. There were adjustments that were made by Marian and I give them credit as they came out and executed those adjustments in game three.”
The Wildcats improve to 16-3 this season and 9-1 in Crossroads League play while the Knights drop to 3-8 and 3-7 in league play. Tonight’s match was the first contest in the second round of play in the league.
Indiana Wesleyan produced a balanced effort tonight with four players earning eight or more kills. Kylie Portera (JR/Lake in the Hills, Ill.) led that group with a match-best 14 kills and a .433 attack percentage. Bianca Cifaldi (JR/Itasca, Ill.) had 13 kills and three block assists while Sarah Collicott (JR/West Lafayette, Ind.) earned nine kills and Remy Bucknor (JR/Euless, Texas) finished with eight kills.
“Kylie Portera, Bianca Cifaldi, and even Sarah Collicott were outstanding for us,” continued Moats. “Kylie has just been steady this year and Bianca and Sarah really stepped up for us.”
Katey Holler (SR/Marion, Ohio) totaled 26 assists and Emily Workman (SO/Tinley Park, Ill.) added 19. The Wildcats served seven aces with Workman, Kelly Cypher (SR/Libertyville, Ill.), and Lindsay Rogan (JR/Champaign, Ill.) each serving two. Ashlen Buck (JR/Brazil, Ind.) collected 13 digs while Cypher had 11 and Rogan had 10.
Indiana Wesleyan begins an extended midseason break as they do not play for nine days. IWU next competes at the Davenport Invitational in Grand Rapids, Michigan on October 9-10.
