Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Defense fueled a 1-0 victory Friday night for Indiana Wesleyan University men’s soccer in a win over Campbellsville (Ky.) at the Waterford Estates Fall Classic hosted by Bethel (Ind.) in Mishawaka, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan is ranked No. 10 in the NAIA Top-25 Poll while Campbellsville sits just outside the poll and is receiving votes.
“Tonight was a really fun match,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Luke Sanford. “Campbellsville is a very good team. They have some real quality and we feel good about this win.”
Campbellsville has shown a penchant to score may goals this season. In their first four matches of the year, all wins, Campbellsville averaged 5.8 goals per match and had at least three goals scored in each of them.
“We focused on the details of the game and the things top teams always take care of in training this week,” said Sanford. “I thought we showed our quality going forward today, but more importantly shut out a team that was averaging over five goals a game. I really challenged Josh Goepper (SR/Shelby Township, Mich.) to step up and he was great today. Our goal was a great build up and a fantastic goal. This was a good win.”
Goalkeeper Josh Goepper was up for the challenge as he preserved the shutout for Indiana Wesleyan. Campbellsville was able to take 14 shots and Goepper stopped all six that were on goal.
“Our top players really stepped up and we were very disciplined in our play tonight,” said Goepper.
Keaton Albert (SR/Park City, Ill.) scored the only goal of the match in the 21st minute. Corey Lopez (SR/Warsaw, Ind.) assisted on the goal as Albert headed the ball past the Tigers keeper for his first tally of the season.
Indiana Wesleyan will play the final match of the Waterford Estates Fall Classic tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. when they battle Bluefield (Va.).
