Box Score 2 ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- No. 17-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University volleyball traveled a long way this weekend to play four matches at the Northwestern Invitational in Orange City, Iowa.
But the Wildcats made the most of their trip with wins in all four matches they played. The four victories give the Wildcats a 6-2 record in the early portion of the season.
Indiana Wesleyan opened play on Saturday morning with a 3-1 victory over Morningside (Iowa). IWU earned the four set victory by scores of 28-30, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22. The perfect weekend was kept intact as Indiana Wesleyan defeated #RV Kansas Wesleyan 3-0 by scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-11.
“To earn four victories this weekend in a top-20 tournament on the road is an incredible team achievement,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Candace Moats. “The unselfishness I saw from the girls gave us coaches the opportunity to use everyone exactly how we needed to counter the different opponents we faced. I am excited and proud to be their coach and I look forward to the journey ahead.”
Kylie Portera (JR/Lake in the Hills, Ill.) had a monstrous Saturday with 18 kills against Morningside and 16 more against Kansas Wesleyan. Portera led all players in kills in each match. She also contributed defensively at the net with a total of three solo blocks and four block assists.
The Wildcats boasted four players in double digit kills in the morning session against Morningside. Joining Portera with double digit kills were Tay Thomas with 16, Remy Bucknor (JR/Euless, Texas) with 12, and Morgan Miller (SO/Goshen, Ind.) with 10. Portera had the highest attack percentage with a .593 on 18 kills in 27 attempts. Portera was the only Wildcat with more than 10 kills against Kansas Wesleyan. Thomas and Bianca Cifaldi (JR/Itasca, Ill.) each added eight while Bucknor contributed seven.
Katey Holler (SR/Marion, Ohio) led Indiana Wesleyan in assists in both matches with 32 in the first match and 24 more in the afternoon session. Emily Workman (SO/Tinley Park, Ill.) added 28 and 18. Lindsay Rogan (JR/Champaign, Ill.) contributed four service aces on Saturday while Holler chipped in two.
Ashlen Buck (JR/Brazil, Ind.) collected 24 digs in the first match with Banner Rodgers (SO/Carrollton, Texas) adding 11 more. Rodgers led the team in the second match with 13 digs while Buck finished at 11.
Indiana Wesleyan will host their season opener and Crossroads League opener at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Luckey Arena when IWU welcomes Spring Arbor (Mich.).
