Box Score HARDEEVILLE, S.C. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball was eliminated from the USC Beaufort Bracket in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round following a 5-1 loss to top-seed Campbellsville (Ky.) in Hardeeville, South Carolina.
Indiana Wesleyan lost their first game of the four team double elimination tournament yesterday in a 1-0 defeat to host USC Beaufort. The Indiana Wesleyan season comes to a close with a 47-12 record. The 47 wins is a new program record.
The Wildcats entered play as one of the top offensive teams in the nation. But on Tuesday they failed to draw a hit as two Tigers pitchers combined for a no-hitter. Victoria Decker and Neely Quint combined on the no-hitter with two walks and three strikeouts.
Campbellsville used a big third inning to take a 4-0 lead. CU scored their four runs on four hits and left one on base. Indiana Wesleyan threatened in the top of the fourth inning as they loaded the bases with nobody out on two walks and an error. But Indiana Wesleyan only managed to plate one run as Kelsey Meyers (JR/Brea, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to force a run home. The three outs never left the infield.
Haley Nixon (FR/Bristol, Ind.) started for the Wildcats and allowed four runs in 4.0 inning of work. She gave up five hits and one walk and did not strike out a Tiger. Carlie Weaver (FR/Brownsburg, Ind.) allowed one unearned run in 1.2 innings while Janessa Guevara (JR/Lathrop, Calif.) retired the only batter she faced on one pitch.
Sam Hemming (SR/Russiaville, Ind.) and Allison Bexell (JR/Avon, Ind.) each reached base via a walk in the fourth inning. Bexell crossed the plate to record the lone IWU run.
Indiana Wesleyan ends their season with much hope for next year as the team graduates only three seniors in Amanda Brunner (SR/Miamisburg, Ohio), Sam Hemming, and Michelle McGary (SR/Plainfield, Ind.).
