Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball has been perfect thus far as they advanced to the Crossroads League Tournament championship game on Friday afternoon.
No. 2-seed Indiana Wesleyan defeated No. 5-seed Huntington (Ind.) 5-1 on Thursday to reach the title game. Indiana Wesleyan and Huntington were the only two remaining unbeaten teams in the 8-team double elimination tournament. IWU is now the last remaining team without a loss.
Indiana Wesleyan will play in the championship game at 1 p.m. at Marian in Indianapolis. Huntington drops down to the loser’s bracket and will play the winner between Grace (Ind.) and Taylor (Ind.) at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. If Indiana Wesleyan loses the 1 p.m. game, an if necessary game will take place at 3 p.m.
In the process of earning the right to play for the Crossroads League championship on Thursday, the Wildcats broke the school record for wins in a season with 46. The previous record of 45 wins was set in 2012 in Coach Steve Babinski’s first season as head coach.
Indiana Wesleyan claimed an early lead against Huntington and never trailed throughout the game. Emily Hastings (SO/Riverside, Ill.) delivered a two out, two run double in the top of the first inning for the early 2-0 lead. Gabby Bogear (JR/Sacramento, Calif.) supplied a sac fly in the fourth inning and pinch hitter Abby White (JR/Georgetown, Texas) hit an RBI double to put Indiana Wesleyan ahead 4-0.
Huntington scored their first and only run in the fifth inning on a double steal. Alex Springer (FR/Fort Wayne, Ind.) got that run back in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single to right field. Haley Nixon (FR/Bristol, Ind.) closed out the game in the seventh inning as just one Forester reached base in the last inning.
Nixon allowed one run on nine hits in the 7.0 inning complete game. She did not walk a batter and struck out six.
Hastings finished 3-for-4 with a double, one run scored, and two knocked in. Allison Bexell (JR/Avon, Ind.) was the only other Wildcat with multiple hits in the game with a 2-for-3 performance. Bexell had one run and one RBI.
Indiana Wesleyan is now 46-10 this season while Huntington drops to 23-24.
