Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- Four pitchers combined to allow one run on Friday as No. 19-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University softball swept Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) in a doubleheader at Wildcat Field.
Indiana Wesleyan claimed a 6-1 victory in the opener and followed with a 4-0 shutout in the second game. The two wins move the IWU win streak to a program record 24 as the team is now 29-2 overall and 12-0 in the Crossroads League. MVNU drops to 8-13 and 5-7 in league play.
Janessa Guevara (JR/Lathrop, Calif.) earned the victory in the opening game as she did not allow a run in 6.0 shutout innings. She gave up just three hits and two walks while striking out four. Cierra Liddick (FR/Marion, Ind.) pitched the seventh inning and allowed one run on three hits. Stellar pitching continued into the second game Friday as Haley Nixon (FR/Bristol, Ind.) earned the win with 6.0 innings of shutout ball. She allowed just two hits and three walks to go with four strikeouts. Carlie Weaver (FR/Brownsburg, Ind.) finished off the game with a scoreless seventh inning to preserve the shutout.
In the opening game, Indiana Wesleyan took advantage of an error by MVNU pitcher Lauren Arndt to score three unearned runs. Indiana Wesleyan poured it on with three additional runs in the fifth inning for a 6-0 lead.
Gabby Bogear (JR/Sacramento, Calif.) was 2-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base, and two runs scored while Allison Bexell (JR/Avon, Ind.) was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Sam Hemming (SR/Russiaville, Ind.) was 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, and a run scored while Emily Hastings (SO/Riverside, Ill.) had a single and a walk.
Just like game one, Indiana Wesleyan plated three runs in the first inning of game two. Hemming and Bogear led off the inning with a walk and a hit by pitch while Sara Kreitzer (SO/Ashland, Ohio) singled to load the bases. Kelsey Meyers (JR/Brea, Calif.) scored Hemming on a fielder’s choice while a throwing error on the same play allowed Bogear to score from second base. Kreitzer scored the third run of the inning on a double steal.
Kreitzer was responsible for the only other run of the game as she homered to right field in the third inning to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead.
Kreitzer and Bexell each finished 2-for-3 at the plate as IWU outhit MVNU 5-3. Kaylynn Rosen (FR/Huntington, Ind.) provided the fifth hit for the Wildcats.
Indiana Wesleyan hosts another doubleheader on Saturday against Grace (Ind.). First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
