Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- Senior Sam Hemming (SR/Russiaville, Ind.) provided the drama on Senior Night with a walk-off home run in the game one of a doubleheader sweep over visiting Spring Arbor (Mich.) at Wildcat Field.
Hemming hit a one out home run to straight away center field to cap a 5-4 come-from-behind victory. Indiana Wesleyan University softball completed the sweep with a 10-2 win in a five inning mercy rule in the nightcap.
In the opening game, Spring Arbor (15-28, 9-21 CL) took the lead with a run in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth inning for a 4-0 advantage. But Indiana Wesleyan responded with a four run sixth inning to tie the score 4-4.
Indiana Wesleyan (39-10, 22-8 CL) came to bat in the seventh inning with the score still all tied at 4-4. After an out to start the inning, Hemming stepped up to bat and drilled a home run to center field to set off a mass celebration at home plate as Indiana Wesleyan earned the 5-4 victory.
Carlie Weaver (FR/Brownsburg, Ind.) collected the win with a perfect inning in relief. Janessa Guevara (JR/Lathrop, Calif.) took a no-decision as she allowed four runs on 10 hits in 6.0 innings.
Hemming, Allison Bexell (JR/Avon, Ind.), Alex Springer (FR/Fort Wayne, Ind.), and Kelsey Meyers (JR/Brea, Calif.) all contributed two hits. Meyers had two RBIs while Hemming, Bexell, and Emily Hastings (SO/Riverside, Ill.) all knocked in one run.
In game two, Spring Arbor scored a pair of runs during their first time at bat. The rest of the game belonged to Indiana Wesleyan as they scored the final 10 runs of the game.
In the bottom of the first inning, the first two Wildcats were retired. But the next eight batters reached base on five hits, two errors, and one walk as the Wildcats scored five runs in the inning. Highlighting the inning was the mammoth two-run home run by Alex Springer that hit the parking lot on the fly as the ball made it all the way to the concession stand building.
Indiana Wesleyan scored two more runs in the second inning, one in the third inning, and the final two runs in the fifth inning. Springer and Amber Roth (FR/Shipshewana, Ind.) hit back-to-back sac flies in the fifth inning for the final two runs to enact the mercy rule.
Springer finished 3-for-3 with a double and a home run plus two runs scored and four RBIs. Nine other Wildcats contributed one hit as Indiana Wesleyan outhit Spring Arbor 12-5. Hastings and Amanda Brunner (SR/Miamisburg, Ohio) each had a pair of RBIs while Springer and Sara Kreitzer (SO/Ashland, Ohio) each scored two runs.
Following the two wins the Wildcats celebrated Senior Night. The three Indiana Wesleyan seniors in Michelle McGary (SR/Plainfield, Ind.), Amanda Brunner, and Sam Hemming were celebrated by their teammates, coaches, and family.
