MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis opened the annual Mark Richards Classic on Friday night with a 9-0 victory over IU Southeast at the Sutter Tennis Center.
The three match, two day classic honors the late Mark Richards who coached tennis at Indiana Wesleyan. His widow Cindy and youngest daughter Leah, a senior at Indiana Wesleyan, were both able to attend the match tonight.
Indiana Wesleyan lost just four games in three doubles matches to build the quick 3-0 lead. The No. 1 team of Katie Wilson (JR/Middletown, Ind.) and Mikayla Marazzi (SO/Abbotsford, BC) and the No. 3 team of Ellen Hornett (SO/Fishers, Ind.) and Diane Jones (SR/Greenwood, Ind.) both won by 8-0 scores. Kelsey Vessels (SO/Roanoke, Ind.) and Rachel Bottorff (SO/Newburgh, Ind.) won 8-4 in the No. 2 competition.
Wilson won No. 1-singles by a 6-2, 6-2 margin and Bottorff claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2-singles. Courtney Siepman (JR/Plainfield, Ind.) earned a 6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 10-6 win at No. 3 play and Vessels pulled out a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4. Marazzi won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5-singles and Morgan Smith (FR/Bremen, Ind.) earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan completes the Mark Richards Classic with a pair of matches on Saturday. IWU battles Huntington (Ind.) at 9 a.m. and finishes weekend play against Taylor (Ind.) at 1 p.m.
