Box Score 2 INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball won a pair of critical Crossroads League games today at No. 24-ranked and league leading Marian in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan took game one by a 3-2 margin and then won 5-2 to seal the sweep. Marian remains in first place with a 23-5 league record while Taylor (Ind.) is second place and 2.0 games back at 20-6 and Indiana Wesleyan is third at 19-7 and 3.0 games behind.
In the opening game, Indiana Wesleyan scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning on a Kelsey Meyers (JR/Brea, Calif.) bases loaded RBI single. IWU added to their lead with a two-run seventh inning to lead 3-0. Amanda Brunner (SR/Miamisburg, Ohio) hit an RBI double while Allison Bexell (JR/Avon, Ind.) followed with a two out RBI single to give Indiana Wesleyan the three run advantage with three outs to go.
Carlie Weaver (FR/Brownsburg, Ind.) took a shutout into the seventh inning but a leadoff home run ended that. Marian closed to 3-2 with two outs and had the tying run on first base. Haley Nixon (FR/Bristol, Ind.) entered and induced a ground ball to second base to end the game and earn the save.
Weaver allowed two runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings. Nixon earned her third save of the season as she retired the only batter she faced.
Brunner finished with two of the five Indiana Wesleyan hits in the game and her double was the only extra base hit for IWU. Brunner, Myers, and Bexell all had one RBI.
In the second game, the Knights quickly plated two runs in the first inning. But Nixon shut down the Knights the rest of the game with just one hit and no runs over the final 6.0 innings.
The Wildcats cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning on a Sara Kreitzer (SO/Ashland, Ohio) leadoff home run. Sam Hemming (SR/Russiaville, Ind.) tied the score 2-2 in the fifth inning with a second Wildcat home run. In the sixth inning, with two outs and one on, Brunner produced the go-ahead score with an RBI single. Meyers came to bat next and gave the Wildcats some insurance with a 2-run home run for a 5-2 lead.
The Wildcats outhit the Knights 10-3 in the victory. Nine Wildcats had hits in the victory as Brunner was had two hits for the only multi-hit effort.
Indiana Wesleyan plays again on Saturday at Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
