Box Score 2 UPLAND, Ind. -- No. 23 Indiana Wesleyan University continued their stellar play with a doubleheader sweep of #RV Taylor (Ind.) on Saturday in Upland, Indiana.
The Wildcats swept the Trojans by scores of 9-3 and 14-5. The Wildcats have won 18 consecutive games to improve to 23-2 this season and remain perfect in the Crossroads League at 6-0. The Trojans drop to 10-8 and 4-2 in league play.
Indiana Wesleyan showcased their power early on Saturday when Emily Hastings (SO/Riverside, Ill.) smashed a grand slam in the second inning for the early 4-2 lead. A solo home run by Taylor in the fourth inning made it a 4-3 game but Indiana Wesleyan responded in the next half inning with two runs for a 6-3 advantage. Alex Springer slugged a 2-run home run to help double up Taylor.
More insurance runs were scored in the top of the seventh inning for Indiana Wesleyan. IWU added three runs, all coming with two outs, for a 9-3 score. Amanda Brunner (SR/Miamisburg, Ohio) hit a 2-run single and Hastings followed with an RBI double to account for the runs.
Janessa Guevara (JR/Lathrop, Calif.) earned the win as she allowed three runs in 6.0 innings of work. Springer was 3-for-3 with a walk while Sara Kreitzer (SO/Ashland, Ohio), Allison Bexell (JR/Avon, Ind.), Brunner, and Hastings all supplied two hits. Hastings ended the game with five RBIs.
In the second game, the Wildcats scored four runs in the first inning and led the rest of the way. Kelsey Meyers (JR/Brea, Calif.) knocked in the first run with an RBI single while Kreitzer drove home a run with a double. Bexell drove home the other two runs on a single through the hole at second.
The Trojans scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to cut the lead in half at 4-2. But the Wildcats answered with another four spot in the fifth inning to lead 8-2. Gabby Bogear (JR/Sacramento, Calif.) scored on an error and Springer followed with a 3-run home run.
Kelsey Kooistra (FR/Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored in the sixth inning on a ground ball by Meyers and later in the inning Sam Hemming (SR/Russiaville, Ind.) stole home on a double steal. Springer singled in another IWU run for an 11-2 lead.
The Trojans plated three runs in the sixth inning but the Wildcats got all three runs back in the top of the seventh inning. Cierra Liddick (FR/Marion, Ind.) had the big hit in the inning as her single scored Brunner and Olivia Rasmussen (SO/Des Moines, Iowa). Kreitzer knocked in the final run on a ground out that scored Kooistra.
Haley Nixon (FR/Bristol, Ind.) was the winning pitcher for the Wildcats as she gave up two runs -- one earned -- in 5.0 innings of work. She gave up just three hits and no walks. Nixon struck out six Trojans.
Springer earned a second 3-hit game on Saturday in addition to five RBIs. Hemming was 2-for-4 with a walk as the Wildcats outhit the Trojans 11-7 in the game.
Indiana Wesleyan next plays at Goshen (Ind.) on Tuesday at 3 p.m. IWU returns home on Friday at 3 p.m. when they host Marian (Ind.).
