Box Score 2 MARION, Ind. -- The wins keep coming for No. 23 Indiana Wesleyan University softball as they opened the home portion of the schedule Friday night with a sweep of Huntington (Ind.) at Wildcat Field.
Indiana Wesleyan has won 16 consecutive games to improve to 21-2 this season and 4-0 in Crossroads League play. IWU won both games by one run with 4-3 and 6-5 final scores.
In the opening game, Indiana Wesleyan struck first with a RBI single by Gabby Bogear (JR/Sacramento, Calif.) to score Kelsey Kooistra (FR/Grand Rapids, Mich.). The lead was short lived as Huntington plated two runs in the top of the fourth inning for a 2-1 lead.
Indiana Wesleyan tied the game in the fifth inning when Allison Bexell (JR/Avon, Ind.) scored on a bunt by Kooistra. IWU regained the lead in the sixth inning with two runs for a 4-2 advantage. Sam Hemming (SR/Russiaville, Ind.) crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Bogear later scored on a Sara Kreitzer (SO/Ashland, Ohio) double.
Huntington drew within one run in the seventh inning and had the tying run at second base. But Janessa Guevara (JR/Lathrop, Calif.) finished the complete game effort when she induced a ground ball back to the mound for the 1-3 putout.
Guevara allowed three runs -- one earned -- on four hits in 7.0 innings. She walked one and struck out three. Bogear and Kooistra each had two hits in the win to account for four of the five Indiana Wesleyan hits. Hemming, Bexell, Amber Roth (FR/Shipshewana, Ind.), and Kooistra each had a stolen base.
In the second game, the Wildcats overcame an early deficit when the Foresters smashed a grand slam in the third inning to lead 5-1. IWU scored one run in the third inning and two more in the fourth inning to close to 5-4. Emily Hastings (SO/Riverside, Ill.) had the big hit in the inning with a two run double.
Alex Springer connected on an RBI single in the fifth inning to tie the score 5-5. Springer returned to bat in the seventh inning with a chance to be the hero. With runners on the corner and one out, Springer drilled a double to deep left-center field to score Gabby Bogear for the walk-off victory.
Haley Nixon (FR/Bristol, Ind.) captured the win with five runs -- four earned -- in 7.0 innings. She scattered eight hits and no walks with four strikeouts.
Springer was 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and two knocked in. Hastings finished 2-for-2 with a walk, two doubles, and two RBIs. The Wildcats outhit the Foresters 11-8.
