Box Score 2 MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- The win streak is now 14 games as Indiana Wesleyan University softball began Crossroads League play with a doubleheader victory on the road at Bethel (Ind.) in Mishawaka, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan pulled out a late victory in the opener by a 5-1 margin before cruising to an 11-0 win in 5 innings in the second game. Indiana Wesleyan is now 19-2 this season and ranked No. 23 in the NAIA while Bethel drops to 4-6.
The Wildcats got things rolling quickly in the opener as a Sara Kreitzer (SO/Ashland, Ohio) RBI double gave IWU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Pilots forced a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third inning. The 1-1 tie held into the sixth inning.
Alex Springer led off the sixth inning with a double and Allison Bexell (JR/Avon, Ind.) followed with a 2-run home run for a 3-1 lead. Amanda Brunner (SR/Miamisburg, Ohio) doubled and reached third on a single by Emily Hastings (SO/Riverside, Ill.). Brunner scored on a bunt single by Kelsey Kooistra (FR/Grand Rapids, Mich.) as IWU led 4-1. Springer completed the scoring with a solo home run in the seventh inning to provide the final score of 5-1.
Janessa Guevara (JR/Lathrop, Calif.) earned the win for the Wildcats with one run on six hits in 5.0 innings of work. Carlie Weaver (FR/Brownsburg, Ind.) earned the save with no runs allowed in 2.0 innings. She struck out five, including all three batters she faced in the seventh inning.
In game two, Kreitzer once again opened the scoring as this time she crushed a 2-run home run for a 2-0 lead. Indiana Wesleyan added on to their lead in the third inning with a second 2-run home run by Kreitzer. Kelsey Meyers (JR/Brea, Calif.) and Springer followed suit with their own home runs for back-to-back-to-back home runs for the Wildcats. IWU led 6-0 after three innings.
Meredith Scholle (JR/Ada, Mich.) led off the fourth inning with a home run for a 7-0 advantage. Gabby Bogear (JR/Sacramento, Calif.) connected on a RBI double, Kreitzer hit a RBI single, Springer had an RBI groundout, and Kaylynn Rosen (FR/Huntington, Ind.) smacked an RBI single to complete the scoring at 11-0.
Haley Nixon (FR/Bristol, Ind.) struck out the side in the seventh inning to complete the shutout bid in 5.0 innings.
Indiana Wesleyan will host their first league games on Friday against Huntington (Ind.). First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
