Box Score 2 WESTFIELD, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University softball extended their win streak to 12 with a doubleheader sweep of NCAA Division II foe Oakland City (Ind.) on Saturday at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana.
The Wildcats won the opening game 9-0 before pulling away late 9-3 in the nightcap. The Wildcats improve to 17-2 this season while the Oaks open the season at 0-2.
Indiana Wesleyan received great pitching from starter Cierra Liddick (FR/Marion, Ind.) and Janessa Guevara (JR/Lathrop, Calif.). Liddick pitched the first 4.0 innings and allowed zero runs on two hits. Guevara finished the final inning to complete the complete game shutout.
IWU got all the runs they needed in the first inning with one run. Indiana Wesleyan added a six spot in the third inning and added two more in the fourth inning.
Nine Wildcats had one hit as Indiana Wesleyan outhit Oakland City 9-2. Sam Hemming (SR/Russiaville, Ind.), Gabby Bogear (JR/Sacramento, Calif.), and Sara Kreitzer (SO/Ashland, Ohio) all reached base with a hit and a walk. Kelsey Meyers (JR/Brea, Calif.) and Alex Springer each contributed two RBIs while Jenny Sharpe (JR/Dayton, Ohio) crossed the plate twice.
In game two, Indiana Wesleyan built a 4-0 lead with a single run in the third and three more in the fifth inning. But Oakland City scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and loaded the basses. Haley Nixon (FR/Bristol, Ind.) came in to relieve starter Carlie Weaver (FR/Brownsburg, Ind.) and was able to get IWU out of the inning with a 4-3 lead. Indiana Wesleyan then put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with five runs.
Nixon collected the save with no runs in 2.2 innings. Weaver earned the win with three runs on five hits in 4.1 innings.
Allison Bexell (JR/Avon, Ind.) was 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs, and a stolen base while Kelsey Meyers was 1-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Sam Hemming and Meredith Scholle (JR/Ada, Mich.) each had two hits and a walk.
