Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- It was an NAIA Top-10 showdown in Indianapolis between the top two teams in the Crossroads League. No. 6-ranked Indiana Wesleyan won the regular season finale 71-67 at No. 7-ranked Marian (Ind.).
Indiana Wesleyan completes the 2014-15 regular season with a 26-4 record and a 17-1 mark in the Crossroads League. IWU had already clinched the Crossroads League regular season championship and the No. 1-seed in the Crossroads League Tournament before the game.
Marian enters the Crossroads League Tournament as the No. 2-seed with a 14-4 league record. Marian is 25-5 on the year.
The Wildcats trailed 22-14 with 7 minutes left in the opening half. From that point the Wildcats finished the opening period on a 15-4 run to lead 29-26 at halftime.
Indiana Wesleyan methodically built their lead over the first 14 minutes of the second half. That peaked on an Emma Stahl (SR/Elkhart, Ind.) layup for a 61-42 lead with 6:43 left in the game. But Marian made one last run.
The Knights began the late charge with a 9-0 to cut the deficit to 61-51. The lead was still 10 points with 1:04 to play as the Wildcats led 68-58. The Knights then went on a 7-1 spurt over the next 23 seconds to suddenly trail just 69-65 and 41 seconds on the clock.
Following one Emma Stahl free throw, Marian connected on two free throws with 17 seconds on the clock to make it a one possession game at 70-67. IWU played keep away for seven seconds until Marian was finally able to foul Jessica Brown (JR/Greenfield, Ind.) with 10 seconds remaining. She hit one of her two free throw shots for a 71-67 lead. Marian was unable to get a shot off until three seconds were left and it was off target as IWU escaped Indianapolis with the win.
Five Wildcats scored in double figures, led by Carlee Cottrell (JR/West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Erika Isham (SR/Tekonsha, Mich.) with 12 points apiece. Stahl contributed 11 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds while Teneil Krebs (SR/Bucyrus, Ohio) poured in 11 points. Katrina Blackmon (SR/Marion, Ind.) earned a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Indiana Wesleyan begins the Crossroads League Tournament on Tuesday night. IWU hosts No. 8-seed Bethel (Ind.) at 7 p.m. in Luckey Arena.
