Men?s Basketball Earns Share of 7th Straight Crossroads League Title

Box Score

MARION, Ind. -- Every season since the 2008-09 season the Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball team has won at least a share of the Crossroads League regular season championship. The streak of seven in a row was extended today.

Indiana Wesleyan cruised to a 72-51 over visiting Spring Arbor (Mich.) on Saturday in Luckey Arena to improve to 26-2 overall and 14-2 in the Crossroads League. Saint Francis (Ind.) is two games behind Indiana Wesleyan at 12-4 with only two games left to play.

“I’m proud of these guys, especially these guys,” Indiana Wesleyan head coach Greg Tonagel said of the seniors. “The senior class has won four in a row. Hats off to these guys.”

Of the previous six Crossroads League championships, Indiana Wesleyan has won four outright titles, including the past two. Indiana Wesleyan is now tied with Grace (Ind.) for the second longest streak with a league championship. Tri-State (Ind.) won 19 straight from 1963-81 while Grace also won 7 straight from 1982-88.

“It is amazing what these players have accomplished over the years,” said Tonagel. “To have this staff and the administration that we have, there are so many pieces you have to have fall in place for this to happen. You need some bounces to go your way to win seven straight.”

Indiana Wesleyan did clinch the No. 1-seed in the upcoming Crossroads League Tournament with the victory. If Indiana Wesleyan and Saint Francis do end the regular season in a tie for first, Indiana Wesleyan has the tie-breaker with the season sweep of USF.

Besides celebrating another league championship on Saturday, Luckey Arena celebrated its past with Remember the Titans Day. The school was known as the Marion College Titans when intercollegiate athletics began in 1968 until 1987-88 when Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats was created. The team wore its throwback Titan uniforms and many former Titan athletes were at the game. There was a pregame banquet for the former Titans at the Rec and Wellness Center.

The only setback on Saturday was that the game started more than an hour late. Snow and fierce winds caused much havoc all over the region today and the Spring Arbor bus was delayed due to a large accident on I-69. Tip-off was at 4:10 p.m. today instead of the normal 3 p.m.

When Tonagel was asked how he thought his team would react to the delay he said, “You never know because it never happens. I was a little nervous and didn’t know how we would respond. But our guys stayed locked in because we are still playing for a lot. They came out with a good focus.”

Indiana Wesleyan did come out slow for all of two minutes as Spring Arbor gained an early 7-2 lead. But over the next 14 minutes it was all Indiana Wesleyan as they outscored Spring Arbor 30-5 to take a sizable 32-12 lead. During the stretch Spring Arbor went scoreless for nearly 10 minutes and only had two field goals.

In the second half, the Cougars narrowed the deficit to 50-40 at the midway point. But the Wildcats scored the next eight points, highlighted by 3-pointers from Bob Peters (SO/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and DJ Bettinger (SR/Richfield, Ohio), for a 58-40 score. The run extended to a 16-2 spurt as IWU led 66-42 with 2:46 remaining.

Indiana Wesleyan will travel to Goshen (Ind.) on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. for their final regular season away game. An Indiana Wesleyan victory or Saint Francis loss at Taylor (Ind.) on Tuesday will clinch the outright title for Indiana Wesleyan.
