Women?s Basketball Opens Iowa Swing with Win at Clarke

DUQUQUE, Iowa -- No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball had to hold on late as their double digit lead was cut to three points late in a 62-57 victory at Clarke (Iowa) in the first of two games this weekend in Iowa.

  • Indiana Wesleyan dominated the first quarter as they led 17-7 following the first 10 minutes of play.
  • Chelsea Winner (JR/Maria Stein, Ohio) scored 9 of her 13 points in the first quarter.
  • A high-scoring second quarter saw Kelsey Key (JR/Anderson, Ind.) finish the scoring with a 3-pointer as the Wildcats headed into halftime leading 35-26.
  • Carlee Cottrell (SR/West Bloomfield, Mich.) hit a 3-pointer in the first minute of the fourth quarter to gain their largest lead of the game at 52-38.
  • Clarke answered with a 9-0 run over the next five minute to trim the deficit to 52-47.
  • Two times in the final 30 seconds Clarke scored to make it a one possession game at three points. Both times Indiana Wesleyan hit two free throws to extend their lead back to five points.
  • The Wildcats shot 54.5-percent (24 of 44) from the field while the Crusaders were limited to 32.7-percent (16 of 49).
  • Indiana Wesleyan earned 16 assists on 24 made field goals. Jessica Brown (SR/Greenfield, Ind.) had a game-best five assists.
  • The Wildcats committed 20 turnovers.

  • Clarke is the first team to score 50 or more points on Indiana Wesleyan since Purdue Calumet in the first game of the season. Indiana Wesleyan went six games without a team scoring 50 or more points.

 

Next Time Out

  • Indiana Wesleyan plays Saturday at Ashford in a rematch of the 2015 NAIA DII National Championship First Round. Ashford won the game 66-50. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET in Clinton, Iowa.
