Defensive Effort Highlights Women?s Basketball Win at Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Cornerstone (Mich.) was limited to 24.5-percent (13 of 53) shooting on Tuesday evening as No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball walked away with a convincing 70-42 win in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

What Went Down

  • Indiana Wesleyan led 20-7 at the end of the first quarter. IWU scored the final 16 points of the quarter to pull away early.
  • The Wildcats continued to build their lead during the second quarter as they outscored the Golden Eagle 19-9. IWU led 39-16 at the break.
  • Indiana Wesleyan opened the second half on a 10-2 run to extend their advantage to 49-18 with 4:20 left in the third quarter. The 31 point cushion was the largest of the game.
  • The Wildcats led by 20 or more points over the final 21:55 of the game.
  • Four Wildcats ended the evening in double figures. Erika Isham (SR/Tekonsha, Mich.) and Kelsey Key (JR/Anderson, Ind.) each scored 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting while Chelsea Winner (JR/Maria Stein, Ohio) and Anna Imhoff (SO/Carmel, Ind.) both added 10 points.
  • Indiana Wesleyan dominated the battle on the boards with a 49-29 advantage. Erika Isham and Chelsea Winner each had a team-best six rebounds as 12 Wildcats had at least one rebound.
  • The Wildcats outscored the Golden Eagles 42-18 in the paint.

 

Extra! Extra!

  • Indiana Wesleyan has beaten Cornerstone in five straight meetings. IWU is 9-3 against Cornerstone over the past 15 years.
  • Both teams entered play tonight with one loss in the early portion of their schedule. Each team was defeated this past weekend by No. 11 Purdue Calumet (Ind.) at the PCU Tip-Off Classic.

  • Indiana Wesleyan hosts their season opener at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Luckey Arena vs. IU South Bend. The game kicks off the first of three straight nights of women’s basketball at Luckey Arena as IWU hosts the Leah Whittaker Memorial Classic on Friday and Saturday.
