Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The 20 game win streak for top-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball came to a screeching halt this afternoon in a 78-72 setback at Marian (Ind.) in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The last Wildcat (15-1, 3-1 CL) loss came way back on March 1, 2014 in a 102-95 overtime loss to Bethel (Ind.) in the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals. The Wildcats went on to win five games at the NAIA DII National Championship and then won the first 15 games of the 2014-15 season.
Saturday’s game was a close, back-and-forth contest as it featured 12 ties and 13 lead changes. Indiana Wesleyan took a 32-31 lead into halftime. The second half was the difference where Marian outscored Indiana Wesleyan 47-40.
Marian went (11-4, 2-2 CL) on to shoot 61.1-percent (11 of 18) in the second half while Indiana Wesleyan was held to 36.7-percent (11 of 30.). Marian shot 25 of their 30 free throw attempts in the second half and hit 20 of them for 80.0-percent.
Jonny Marlin (JR/Greenwood, Ind.) led the Wildcats with 24 points on 7-of-16 shooting. He connected on 9-of-11 free throws and dished out a game-best 6 assists. Lane Mahurin (SO/Rockville, Ind.) was the only other Wildcat to reach double figures in scoring with 11 points. Mahurin grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. DJ Bettinger (SR/Richfield, Ohio) was 3-of-6 from deep for 9 points, Zac Vandewater (SR/Warsaw, Ind.) added 8 points, while Josh Mawhorr (JR/Muncie, Ind.) and Jacob Johnson (FR/Mooresville, Ind.) each contributed 7 points.
Dion Smith paced the Knights with 24 points and 7 rebounds. He was 9-of-14 from the floor and hit all 6 free throw attempts. Curtis Green scored 16 points and Nick Painter added 15 points.
Indiana Wesleyan looks to get back on the winning track on Tuesday as they host Huntington (Ind.) inside Luckey Arena at 7 p.m.
